Mark was interrogated by a crackteam of specialists
in Mid-September 2000...
You say your songs are inspired by nature. Do you imagine nature
or place yourself in nature in some way? I
heard you went to the desert to write - was that an example of this?
It's not such an intentional process for us. Nature is similar
to music in many ways but just a different sense being stimulated.
The desert is just one of those places where it is easy to find
peace and be able to right music.
How did dredg form & how did your
sound evolve to what it is today?
We were all friends in high school and started playing covers
together. We eventually thought, why can't we just write songs that
we like.
dredg has been a pretty mysterious faceless
band. As your success increases do you want to maintain this?
Yes.
Are there any artists you would like to
collaborate with?
There's always those artists we would like to collaborate, it's
just a matter of doing it tastefully among today's cameo craze.
How much does each member of the band
put into the writing process? What are each of your specialties?
We write our songs together. Of course our specialties are the
instruments we play but we trade ideas from person to person.
Whats your favorite band you've shared
the stage with?
We couldn't name one: Queens of the Stoneage, Far, the Apex Theory,
Alien Ant Farm, among many others.
What are your 'all time' favorite bands/artists?
Couldn't begin to list them...
Is Gavin worried about sharing the same
1st name with that guy from Bush? Should we expect a new run of
"I love Gavin" t-shirts?
No, he's just going to change his name.
You guys mentioned in the past that you're
evolving in music and won't be playing the Orph-style anymore,
does that mean Orph will never be re-released or played live
again?
'Never' is a big word. We just have moved on from that stage.
It was good for what it is, but we don't feel it is entirely us.
Whats with the name 'dredg'?
It's a request.
Whats the story behind the guy on the
cover of Orph? And what about the shaman in leitmotif?
Both of these were pictures, which to us, fit ideas from the recordings
they're on.
Where do your song titles come from? Any
examples?
Anything that is relevant to the song's creation or overall feeling.
We try not to use the chorus as the title.
What are some of the more strange instruments
we hear on the CD? The most interesting instrument to me is the
first and last sound you hear.
It is called a 'spirit catcher' and it consists of a wood spoke
and large rubber bands. The sound is created by spinning it as fast
as you can. We had two different sized ones and two of us stood
in this big room with two mics to capture that sound.
Got any hidden talents?
We haven't found them yet.
What direction are you taking with the
new CD? Is it going to have a storyline like leitmotif? When
is it coming out?
More focused/more experimental, harder/softer, yes/no...don't know.
Where would you like dredg to go from
here?
Away from here.
*Many thanks to the band to set some time
aside to play Barbara Walters with us.*
*Mucho gratitude to Jeff for constantly inspirating brainstorms
and putting this all together.*
