Alright, just calm down, I'll try to help you
understand what's going on here. Ok, well, let's start out with exactly what
capoeira is. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial/folk art. It's a combination
of self defense, dance, and acrobatic movements made by a pair of capoeiristas
(people who practice capoeira) trading offensive and defensive movements
in a rythym and speed determined by the music to which they are playing the
game.
The game is played by a group of capoeiristas, most
of them sitting or standing in a roda (pronounced HOH-da), some playing the
instruments, and two playing the game. The people forming the roda act as
borders to the people playing, clap to the rythym, and sing the chori (plural
of chorus :) to the songs. The people playing the instruments satnd or sit
at the front of the circle and creat the music, and usually the person playing
the center berimbau will start the song to which the people in the roda will
respond with the chori when the time is right. Nothing in the game is
random!
Know what? I don't know how I want to phrase everything
else I want to say yet! There is SO MUCH MORE to the game, but you can send
me your questions and I'll respond to them here.
* I have decided not to put instructions for moves
on this page because I want self teaching to stop. If you're a self teacher
who thinks you're a real capoeirista stop it, stop it right now and get to
class! It really really is cool to stay in school, especially if it's capoeira
school! I'm terribly sorry if you can't find a school near you, but keep
yourself in good shape, and pursue other ambitions of yours (some of mine
include learning new languages and Traditional Scottish Dancing!) until one
day capoeira spreads into every corner of the world, because is will, and
you can learn it at any age.
Instruments It's important for you to
know what the instruments are. This is the berimbau. (BEER-ihm-bow like "take
a bow" not "tie a bow") . |
