Bells

Stone Bells
(tm) Traditionally, bells are sacred. Their ring has beena call to higher consciousness. In the great cathedrals of Europe, the buildersconstructed magnificent towers to house their bells. The ancient civilizationsof India, Sumer and Egypt all had bells. The Chinese artisan, thousands ofyears ago, was quite adept in casting bells. In the liturgy of many Christianfaiths, bells are rung in the holiest part of the service. Why does the soundof the bell hold such a position in so many cultures? Could its mystery liein the fact that the bell sounds its fundamental tone and yet rings withthe higher overtones of its basic sound? Do these sounds within sounds givethe bell this quality of the sacred? Do these sounds correspond to somethingin the person which actually calls him to respond? One of the functions ofbells is that they have become time keepers, at least in the centuries leadingup to our era. The phenomenon of hearing a churchbell chime 3 times for 3:00creates a sense of stillness, when listening to the sound. While our silentdigital watches, working with their own mechanism, remind us of the fleetingaspect of time, and are usually a reminder of things to be done. Our associationwith this kind of clock gives us the feeling that time is running quickly, rushing us along with its hectic pace. On the other hand, the bell soundsas a pause on the hour, creating a different view of time, one which is moreorganic, more in tune with nature. These bells are handmade and rich inharmonics. The resonator is bluestone, used for its solidity, for its earthiness,as the base for this more ethereal sound. This concept is very close to thatof the ancient Chinese, who, 5,000 years ago, believed that music was theregulating factor between the earth and the heavens. We hope that some timeduring the day you actually ring your bell, and it serves as a pause, asa moment to relax and just listen to its sound.
