Genma Saotome

The Tough Yet Caring Father

At first glance, Genma's parenting techniques towards his son might seem pretty tough.  Like when Ranma was only six, Genma would repeatedly wrap him with fish-sausages and throw him into a pit of hungry cats in order to teach him Cat-Fu, which instead traumatizes him into being totally terrified of cats.  And due to this trauma, whenever Ranma's fear of cats becomes too intense, his only way of dealing with it is to mentally become a cat himself!  Despite all that, however, Genma really is a caring father and is only doing what he see's as best for his one and only son.

When Ranma was only six years old, Genma promised his wife, Nodoka Saotome, that he'd make their son into a strong martial artist, so both father and son set out on a ten-year training mission.  During that time, Genma got into several predicaments which resulted in him either promising Ranma to another man's daughter, or just plain selling him!  Yes, Genma has pulled a few scams in his time, most of them getting Ranma into trouble later on.  But in his mind, Genma was always doing it for Ranma's best.

Well, after the little incident at Jusenkyo that cursed him to change into a panda when splashed with cold water and his son into a girl (hot water changes them back), he decides it's time that his son choose one of the daughters of his old friend, Soun Tendo, (who he trained with as a young man under Happosai) as a fiance.  Though Ranma was unwilling to say the least, the two move into the Tendo Dojo and have been living there ever since.  And they probably won't be going home anytime soon, for if Nodoka found out what had happened to her son and husband at Jusenkyo, she'd make them commit "seppoku," a ritualistic type of suicide!

Genma and Soun had their children's marriage arranged for a long time, dreaming of the day that they would carry on the Anything-Goes School of Martial Arts.  However, Ranma and Akane aren't exactly thrilled with their engagement, so it may be a while before their fathers ever see them walk down the isle.  In the meantime though, Genma would like for his son to respect him more (though you really can't blame Ranma for his behavior after the way his father acts and all that he's put him through).  But nonetheless, Genma is proud of his son and would do anything for his sake.  Even if he, like Soun, is a bit over-dramatic sometimes, he always keeps his sense of humor.  Actually, Genma even seems to enjoy being half panda!
