The Average, Run-of-the-Mill Japanese Family

         Meet Soun Tendo, the over-emotional father of Kasumi (age 19), Nabiki (age 17), and Akane (age 16).  He's a good man and the proud owner of the "Tendo Anything-Goes Martial Arts Training Hall."  Though he may seem sturdy and sensible most of the time, he has the habit of over reacting to almost anything.  But then again, can you blame him?  He's a single father living with three unwed daughters, two free-loading house guests, and a perverted old pantie thief!  Not only this, but with everything that goes on at the Tendo Dojo, how can his nerves ever be at ease?  

         However, when things are calm, Soun really does live a good life.  He can be just as laid back as a his best friend Genma (whom he trained with as a young man under Happosai), and the two often sit back and enjoy a frosty beer or a good game of shogi (Japanese chess).  And just like Genma, Soun is always concerned with the sake of his children, and especially wants nothing more then to finally see Ranma and Akane accept their engagement so that the Anything-Goes school's legacy will be secured.  

         But let us not forget his other daughters!  First there is sweet, good natured Kasumi.  She is like the traditional mother figure in the home, happily cooking and cleaning for her family, and always remaining calm regardless of what happens.  Kasumi is older then the other teen characters, so she always has good advice to offer.   Everyone can always count on her because she's always cheery and kind to whoever she encounters!

         However, Nabiki is much different!  Sarcastic, easy-going, witty, and with a love for comfort, Nabiki's main concerns are making money, and of course she always has a plan to accomplish that (whether it be selling pictures of Akane and Ranma to Kuno, taking bets on Ranma's fights then helping his opponent to win so that she doesn't lose money, or her many other extortion schemes).  With her intelligence, attitude, and flare for making "deals," Nabiki is a modern girl who knows how to take advantage of any situation for her own gain.  

         Together, the Tendo family are probably the most normal characters in the whole series.  And though Soun, Kasumi, and Nabiki may not often play as big of a role in the series as Akane and the others do, Soun's emotional breakdowns, Kasumi's constant cheerfulness, and Nabiki's greedy plots always contribute to the humorous (and wacky) variety of chaos at the Tendo Dojo!
