What is Schutzhund? Schutzhund is a sport that originated in Germany to test and challenge the temperament and ability of the working dog. This sporting event consists of three phases in the competition that includes: tracking; obedience; and protection. There are three different levels of Schutzhund training that are evidenced by the titles of SchH 1, SchH 2, and SchH 3. Each level being more challenging for the dog and handler.

"Schutzhund is a sport that focuses on developing & evaluating those traits in dogs that make them more useful & happier companions to their owners. The purpose of Schutzhund is to demonstrate the dog's intelligence & utility. It also measures the dog's mental stability, endurance, structural efficiencies, ability to scent, willingness to work, courage, & trainability.

This working dog sport offers an opportunity for dog owners to train their dog & compete with each other for recognition of both the handler's ability to train & the dog's ability to perform as required. It is a sport enjoyed by persons of varied professions, who join together in a camaraderie born of their common interest in working with their dogs. Persons of all ages & conditions of life even those with significant disabilities enjoy Schutzhund as a sport. Often, it is a family sport."

Success in the sport of Schutzhund can be elusive. It first requires a very special dog with the correct temperament and working ability; that dog has to have been properly raised, and then properly trained. The process is very physical and labor intensive for both the dog and the handler. It requires a lot of time, energy, commitment, effort, and often expense on the part of the handler; much more than most tend to initially expect to devote to the pursuit. But, for those dogs and handlers that are cut out for it, it is a very rewarding journey.

Seagoville Working Dog Club (SWDC), formed in 1995, is a full member club of the German Shepherd Dog Club of America Working Dog Association (GSDCA-WDA). We are a family oriented, multi-breed club, devoted to the sport of Schutzhund, and to training dogs in all phases of this sport.

The goal of SWDC is to help each member succeed with their dog to the best ability of the dog and the handler. Your success is very important to all of us. When you succeed, SWDC succeeds. However, we do not place pressure on our members to advance, in order to advance the club. SWDC has never had the goal of becoming the biggest club or to be the most competitive club, and we are not seeking to be everything to everyone.

SWDC is built on a very strong and loyal TEAM spirit. We support SWDC and each other above all. Our club is about our members, their dogs, and the training that has joined us together. We are a serious sport dog training club. The majority of our time is spent training and learning/educating. We are a happy and fun group, and we make the time to support each other.

Our membership has competed in local, regional and national events and bring with them a vast amount of training and competition knowledge to the club. While many of our members are involved in other areas besides schutzhund, ranging from conformation to other competitive dog sports, SWDC training is schutzhund focused. SWDC serves the Dallas, Fort Worth Metroplex (DFW) and its surrounding areas.

Joining SWDC:
We always welcome new members who are serious about training and competing with their dogs in the sport of schutzhund. If you are interested in training with SWDC, contact us and set an appointment to come out and visit with us at one of our training sessions. There is no fee to visit. If after you attend a couple sessions you find that schutzhund training is what you seriously want to do with your dog and you'd like to join SWDC and train with us, you can fill out our application for membership.

Please be aware that club training is restricted to only Schutzhund sport competition training for dogs that are working toward Schutzhund titles. We do not offer any "Personal/Home/Guard dog" protection type training.

About Our Training Director: Angel Ayala
Angel is a Certified Master Trainer and has been involved in the sport of Schutzhund since 1980. He is a member of GSDCA-WDA and USA. Additionally, he has extensive experience in training innumerable police K-9, narcotics detection dogs, riot control dogs, personal protection dogs, and has been certified by the state of California Board of Education as a training instructor.

In pursuit of his dream, straight out of high school, Angel went on to be formally trained at the USA's leading, pioneer police dog training kennels, "Mandelyn School for Dog Trainers". Ray Marcois, the owner, and Angel's mentor recognized his talents early on and hired Angel. Angel went on to serve "Mandelyn Kennels" in Bakersfield, California as the head instructor, training hundreds of students to become professional dog trainers, police force K-9 handlers and Schutzhund trainers. There, he had the opportunity to work with numerous specimens from some of the greatest working dog bloodlines in the world.

Now retired from dog training as a profession, Angel brings his vast experience in training working dogs and students to the sport of Schutzhund (his passion) as SWDC's President, Training Director and Senior Helper. Angel is a WDA certified helper.

Chris Webber GSDCA-WDA and USA
Eddie Guerra GSDCA-WDA and USA

Chris has received his foundation Schutzhund sport training under Angel's expert instruction and watchful eye. Additionally, Chris has attended many worthwhile seminars that he could make it out to over the years to further broaden his education. Chris now has many years of trial helper work under his sleeve. Chris has routinely served as the SWDC club trial decoy, and has always willingly donated his time as a trial decoy to other clubs in need. Chris has received exceptional feedback from the judges he has decoyed under both at a local and at the national level. Chris is a safe, fair and uniform trial decoy that we are blessed to have working with us here at SWDC. Chris is a WDA certified helper.

Our newest SWDC developing helper is Eddie Guerra. Eddie is just starting out with helper work but Angel reports he has a lot of natural talent and offers much promise.
