a. MOHR, Jacob

April 4, 1998
Dear Larry,
Just a quick note - if you happen to come across the following while you are doing cemetery research I would appreciate a note on - Jacob Mohr 1798- ??
Jacob's wife, Eva C. Reifel [Mohr] was buried in the Old Peppertown Cemetery and most of the rest of the Mohrs across the road in the newer section, however, I never did find Jacob's grave. He is listed in the 1870 US Census as living with another family after his wife, Eva, died. There is the possibility that he is buried in another cemetery in Metamora or Salt Creek Township in Franklin County.
Sincerely, Gene - G.Mohr@juno.com

5. PLOT LIST vs. ALPHABETICAL LIST: When Helen Moore prepared her report on the Peppertown cemeteries, she prepared plot lists and crossreferenced alphabetical lists. For some people the information on one list is different from that on another list. In most cases these differences appear to be simple typographical errors. Each time this occurs, it has been noted on each website plot list. Help is needed from informed readers to determine which name or date is the correct one. 6. THE NAMING OF PEPPERTOWN: August Pepper, born November 25, 1820 [Reifel, History] or 1821 [on his tombstone], is the namesake of Peppertown, Franklin County, Indiana. August Pepper, his wife and family settled at this Salt Creek Township site in 1851--just one year too late to appear on the 1850 U.S. Census [they lived in Butler Township, Franklin County, in 1850].

Peppertown was laid out by Mr. Fielding Berry, a surveyor, for Mr. John C. Koerner, proprietor of the local merchantile store, in August 1859. Mr. Koerner, therefore, is considered to be the founder of Peppertown. By trade August Pepper had been a calico printer. He became a partner in conducting Mr. Koerner's country store, and was thereafter known as the community grocer. [Source: History of Franklin County, Indiana, 1915, by August J. Reifel, published by Bowen & Company, Indianapolis, Indiana.]

The villages of Peppertown and Hamburg first appeared by name on the 1880 U.S. Census records. Peppertown existed as a town until _____ [please help me with this date], and today the only community structure still in use is the St. Nicholas Lutheran Church. The wife of August Pepper was Elisabeth "Elise" Hannebaum, who immigrated to America with her parents and four younger siblings on the ship Marianne in 1843. She married August Pepper in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, and they had 11 children.

7. ALL-TIME SALT CREEK RESIDENTS: Salt Creek Township was created in 1850, just in time for the 1850 U.S. Census. The surnames of families that lived in Salt Creek Township, plus notes about where the surnames can be found, is contained on a related website master list.
