Welcome to Jenny's

Kidney/Pancreas Ordeal

I have been a Type 1 diabetic since February 1978. I've always been insulin dependant.

In 1990 I was attacked by a dog and had a severe plateau fracture. Due to my leg, I've had a tibia replacement, 8 bones removed from my foot, 6 surgeries, not to mention a total knee replacement.

On January 13, 1998 I had emergency surgery and started Hemo dialysis due to Kidney failure. Total renal failure, I was so sick.

March 1998 I started PD. (Peritoneal Dialysis) I do exchanges of a dianeal dextrose solution. I put 2500 ml in my peritoneal cavity and hold it almost 3-4 hours. Then I drain and refill.

I love PD. I'm 42 years young and very active. I still go to the beach and do an exchange in the car. I have 2, 15 year olds at home so I don't have time to be on Hemo dialysis.

I am presently in the Kidney/Pancreas mode.

The hospital is starting my testing. They will work me up thoroughly. You see, if there is any signs of cancer I won't qualify for the transplant. I am currently waiting for:

1. a mammogram

2. Stress Test

3. Lower Extremity Evaluations

4. Pap Smear

5. Base Line Labs

6. PPD's

all are scheduled for June 18, 1998.

My eyes are checked regularly due to my Diabetes. I go to the Storm Eye Institute in Charleston, SC. My teeth are in good condition, I go to the Dentist on a regular basis. Thank goodness I had the sense to quit smoking months before I got sick. Something told me it was time.

I want to document my feelings and fears. If I can be of help to just one person, that will make me happy. I'm very lucky and I want to be there for others. I have a wonderful line of support.
