How To

There are just a few of the little things I made for my car (hey, I gotta keep some of the secrets to myself). Most of the time, they didn't have, or didn't make these items for Civics so I had to be a little inventive. I hope these how-to's help.

This how-to is for the shield I made for the Iceman Cold Air Intake. Since I live in NY, we get alot of rain so I had to come up with a way to protect the filter from the water since the filter sits behind the front bumper and it can get wet rather easily during the rain. I had it on the car for almost a year and I never had any problems with excess water getting into my engine. Actually, when I took the filter out to clean, the part covered by the shield looked as clean as the day I put the filter in. I was really surprised, I guess it really works =)

Ok, here is how I made the shield for my Iceman (Sorry, I don't have any "real" pictures of the set up because it's currently on another car. If I have the chance, I'll take some pictures.)

This is how I made the mesh grill for my car. It's fairly simple, The only tools you'll need are :
  • screw driver (phillips)
  • 10 mm ratchet
  • chicken wire(mesh) from home depot
  • wire cutter
  • small hand saw or dremel
  • 4 screws.

Figure 1
  • First, take off the front bumper. There are two 10mm bolts under the bumper, 5 screws above it and 1 screw on either side, behind the rubber splash guard. See Figure 1.
  • Next, take either the hand saw or dremel and cut the plastic grill. If you live in a state where you are required to have a front license plate, I think there are like 3 bolts you have to take off for the bracket.
  • Measure the length of the opening... top, bottom and length of either side. Figure 2
  • Cut the desired length from the sheet of wire mesh. Leave around 1/2 inch or so on top and bottom of the mesh.
  • When the grill is cut out, leave 2 small tabs on top and bottom of the grill as seen in figure 2.
  • Bend the tabs and place the grill into the grill opening in the bumper.
  • Fasten the grill in place with the screws.
  • Replace the bumper. see Figure 3.

*Depending on the type of chicken wire you get, you might have to paint the grill with some Rustoleum-type paint to prevent rusting.

I finally decided to put together a how to on how to make my headlight slits. I have receieved 100s of emails asking how I made them so here it is. For the record, I made these covers over 2 1/2 years ago. Then, the industry didn't have any slits for any cars available. There are one or two people (I won't name names) which have claimed responsibility for making these first. Anyway, that's my story. Please, if you do decide to make these (or any of the items on this page) don't pass them off as your own.

This is how I made the headlight slits for my car. It's fairly simple, The only tools you'll need are :
  • 1 set of GTS Headlight Covers (clear or smoked)
  • masking tape
  • can of primer paint
  • can of body matching or contrasting paint.
  • small hand saw or dremel

Figure 1
  • First, take one of the covers and place it on the headlight assembly.
  • Take the masking tape and tape off the portion you're gonna cut off. See Figure 1.
  • Take the cover off and cut along the top of the masking tape with the dremel or saw. See Figure 2. Figure 2
  • Cover the headlight slit with Primer paint and let dry.
  • Paint the headlight slit with the paint.
  • When dry, place the slit on top of the headlight and close hood. This is fairly secure. Mine has withstood 135+mph runs and has not fallen or flew off yet.
  • Helpful Tip: Cover the inside of the slit with electrical tape, this will block any light from coming through the cover.
