TecKno's Tips and Hints Library

This page has recently been restructured for ease of use in looking up help information.  For those of you familiar with the old format, I've included a link to that as well.  Please note that these hints were written over a period of time.  AOL and Windows are constantly making changes.  I will try to update these as often as possible to include those changes.  This page is best viewed if you maximize your internet window.

Please be advised that I am not a representative of AOL or any other ISP.  I do not warrant any of the hints contained below.

AOL Tips and Tricks

Having trouble signing on?

For many of us, AOL access is becoming a problem. I myself have spent almost an hour trying to sign on some nights. One tip to signing on faster is this. Store your password by using 1)members, 2) preferences and 3) password. Then if you get the busy message, while trying to sign on immediately hit your space bar twice. This will reset the modem and start the dialing procedure faster.   If you are using AOL 4.0 and Windows 95/98 hit space bar and then enter. Please note that storing you password will allow anyone with access to your computer to be able to sign on using your screen name, so for those of you with children or something to hide, I would not advise this procedure.

Wavs & Sounds

"Why can't I hear those Wavs?" (inspired by QueenOTU)

I think many of us newbies have gone through this learning process (I did). But for those of you still having problems, I will revisit this topic. AOL for some reason that is beyond me, sets the default directory for downloading attached files to the C:\AOLXX\Download directory (Where the XX represents your AOL Version number). This is fine for some mail, but it just doesn't cut it for wavs. In order for you to hear wavs while in chat rooms two things are required.

1) you must have that particular wav downloaded on your hard drive, and

2) it must be in your C:\AOLXX directory.

One way to check your default directory is to go to 1) File, and then 2)Download Manager. Look for a line that says "Files will be downloaded to c:\aolxx........... This is your default directory. If it happens to be set to something other than C:\AOLXX then that is the directory that you will probably fine those darn elusive wavs in. To change the default directory, while still on the above screen, click on select destination and type in your AOL directory name, such as C:\AOL30, then click ok. Rather than redownloading wavs to the correct directory, you may want to go to dos prompt in the directory where you find those wavs. For instance if you find that all the wavs you have downloaded are in the C:\AOLXX\Download directory, you could move them to the proper place by the following entering the following command. Copy c:\aolxx\download\*.wav c:\aolxx This will redirect those pesky little wavs to their proper home.

Sounds for your buddy list:

First make sure you have have checked off the sound boxes in the "Preferences" section of your Buddy List. To access this, click on Members, then on buddy list, then on the preferences box. If for some reason you have never downloaded the buddy sound installer package, you can do so by clicking here ---> Door Bell/Slam Sound Installer Find your WIN.INI file in your C:\WINDOWS\ directory. In order to enable the sounds for your buddy list, you will need to make sure you have the following lines in the Sound section of your win.ini file. To find the win.ini file:

Windows 3.x Users

1. In the Program Manager, Click on the Main Group, click on the File Manager.
2. Under the File Menu, click on Run.
3. Type in SYSEDIT
4. Select C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI

Win95 Users

1. Click on the "Start"
2. Click on "Run"
3. Type in "Sysedit" (this will open up several files at once, layering them)
4. Click on the "win.ini" file.

For both Win95 and Win3.1 Users, scroll down and

5. Look for the [Sounds] section.
6. Add the following lines:
BuddyIn=C:\WINDOWS\DING.WAV,BuddyIn
    BuddyOut=C:\WINDOWS\DING.WAV,BuddyOut

7. Save the changes to win.ini
8. Reboot your computer

If you are really feeling brave after surviving the last few steps, you might want to try to be creative by changing the sound to whatever sound you want, if you are not particular fond of the default sounds. You can assign the sounds in the Control Panel by double-clicking the Sounds icon.

For windows 95 users from here you can scroll down to the AOL directory, and find the particular sound action you want to replace. Highlight it. Look at the box below the Sound and it will tell you what wav is presently assigned to that function. If you wish to change to a different wav, then you click the browse button, to locate the wave you want to replace it with, and hit enter. Then click apply, then click ok. If you would like to download some of the more creative sounds for use with your buddy list, click here ---> Buddy Lists Sounds for a whole library of sounds to download.

CONVERTING WAVS FOR WINDOWS
How to convert wavs so that they take less memory without having to download any more software:

1) Go into Accessories and find the Sound Recorder (mine is in Multimedia folder)open it. Open wav you wish to convert. Another way is to simply go to folder where wav is that you want to convert and double click on it which opens it and starts Sound Recorder

2) While the wav is playing click the black square to pause music. This should leave the player in a pause mode on the top of your screen.

3) Now click on File on the Sound Recorder and click on Properties. You should see a screen telling you the length of the wav and at what level it was recorded at (example-22,500mhz,16bit mono or something similar). What you need to do is change this attribute setting so wav takes up less space. From FORMAT dropdown menu choose "Playback format".

4) Click on the convert now button which will bring up 3 scrolling boxes. Under FORMAT, choose ADPCM. Under ATTRIBUTES, choose a lower mhz or lower bit rate and then click on Ok". You will see the wav actually converting and the new size of file will be changed. If wav was already at 11,250, you simply click on the OK at the bottom, but make sure it is set at 8mono.

5) Once the conversion is finished (approx 10 sec) you then click on "OK" at the bottom of screen which will return you to the sound player .

6) Listen to the converted wav. If it sounds tiny or scratchy, you can "revert" to original in File menu and then choose a different setting. Keep converting and listening until you have compressed the wave and still have acceptable sound quality.

7) Click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the player and then you should get request box asking if the change is what you want to do. Simply click yes and the procedure is complete. Be aware that your total kb or mb at the bottom may not read the correct amount until you have closed the program and re-entered or chosen "refresh" from the VIEW menu.

Your AOL Mail Flag may be Stuck (Do I have bad breath or what?)

If you think you have new mail and it shows "No new mail," your mail flag may be stuck.

To fix this problem yourself, all you have to do is: Send yourself mail with "set mail flag " in the Subject box. Note that it must be all in lower case letters. Log off and wait a few minutes then log back on this normally fixes this problem with the stuck mail flag . For more help on using mail try ---> Mail Center

Compact your personal file cabinet
:

This is an easy procedure, just click on File on your top tool bar. Then click on Personal File Cabinet, then click on Compact PFC.  Although you may have deleted files from your file cabinet , they are still taking up space. Until you run this utility, your hard drive space has not been reclaimed.

Moving Your Filing Cabinet:

Some of us lucky people  have both a desktop and a laptop. If you check you'll notice that the AOL Personal Filing Cabinet (PFC) on each machine is different. That's because messages are stored on the machine where you read (or download) them. If you'd like to have the same PFC on both, then follow these instructions.

The first step is to decide which of your PFC's is most important to you. Consider this your "master" PFC. Next, copy the data file from the first PFC onto a floppy disk. You'll find it in the Organize subdirectory of your AOL directory. Look for the one with the same name as your screen name.

Now rename the PFC file on your 2nd computer. (You may want to first Email yourself any important stuff on the 2nd computer, so that all your important stuff will be saved on both computers)

Finally, copy the master PFC file from the floppy into the Organize subdirectory of your 2nd computer. Now both computers have the same PFC!

To keep them the same after the transfer of files, you may want to try reading all new mail on one computer, then click the Keep As New button so you can later access and "read" it from the other computer. When you "read it" the second time, you'll have a copy in both filing cabinets.

When you send mail, send a copy to yourself, which you can then read from the 2nd computer to have it saved.

Of course, all this assumes that you've set your PFCs to automatically save all mail sent and received. If not, none of this will work. To check this, go to Preferences, click Mail Preferences and then check "Retain all mail I send" and "Retain all mail I read." Be sure and check this on both computers.

Flash Sessions

I have heard lots of friends tell me about losing e-mail and files they have downloaded. I have found Flash Sessions very useful in maintaining files I want to keep. The main purpose of a flash session is to download multiple emails, newsgroup messages,or download files into your personal file cabinet. Once downloaded, the files can be read on or off line. Flash sessions also can be used to schedule downloads of email or Newsgroup messages at a particular time of day and for any day(s) of the week. Flash sessions can also be used to send mail.  You must leave your computer on in order for the session to run, and you will be required to store your password.

NOTE: If you are going to schedule flash sessions to run automatically, I would not choose to download attached files. With all the junk mail and spaming going on, you are liable to download a virus or password stealer program. Although these programs are not activated until run, I still think this is a very dangerous procedure.

Another important reminder is that if you schedule automatic flash sessions, you probably should put a password on your personal file cabinet, if anyone else has access to your computer. Since files are placed in your file cabinet, it would be accessible to anyone having access to your computer, unless it is protected. Some of the features of flash sessions are as follows:

- Send e-mail you composed and saved to be sent later.

- Retrieve your new, unread e-mail.

- Download files that are attached to your unread e-mail.

- Send and retrieve newsgroup posts.

- Download files you have collected in your Download Manager.

You can also Run a FlashSession at any time you are online by clicking on Mail, clicking on either Setup Flash Session or Activate FlashSession now. For help walking you through the various options associated with schedule flash sessions, click here FlashSessions

Parental Controls

With all the latest additions to plots, I have noticed a lot of younger players playing. In addition, we have a lot of players with children. AOL and the Internet can be a very dangerous place for adults, much less their children. Therefore, Papa suggested an article on Parental Controls which follows.

AOL offer lots of solutions to preventing children from accessing web sites, downloading files, utilizing Instant Messages and Chats that may not be suitable for children of a variety of ages. The best way to access these controls is first sign on using your master account name and set up a screen name for your child. This is done by clicking on Members, Clicking on My AOL, then Click on Set Up AOL Now, then click on Screen Names. If your child already has a screen name, then instead of clicking on Screen Names, Click on Parental Controls. Once the yellow button beside the Parental Controls is highlighted, click on the Set it Up Now Button on the lower far right side of the screen. This will bring you to a screen that allows you to select the level of control you wish to place on each screen name. AOL provides 3 levels of control for children. 1) Kids Only 2) Young Teen and 3) Mature Teen. Depending upon the maturity of your child, you can set controls that AOL recommends for each age grouping.

Furthermore, you can restrict these Options even more, by clicking on the Set Custom Controls button at the lower left side of the screen. This selection will allow you to tailor restrictions on the following 5 categories. 1) Chats, 2) Downloading 3) Newgroups 4) Email and 5) the Web. This allows you to pick and choose which sites will be restricted. Most selections will allow you to block or allow access to some, all, or none of the sites. Of course the best control of all is to spend some time online with your child and to learn his/her online neighborhood.

There are some excellent websites and AOL sites out there designed just for the younger children. One of these is AOL Kids Only which contains links to Kids Only Chats, Homework help, Sports, and Games that are for the younger children. Also there is a world of information on the web that is very educational for your child.

One suggestion that AOL makes is to create and store your child's password. this can be done by clicking on Members, Preferences, Passwords and then typing the password in for your child's screen name. There are advantages and disadvantages to this procedure. The advantage is that your child does not know his/her password and therefore can't give it out to Hackers who try their Password Stealing techniques on your child. The disadvantage is that your child or anyone else with access to your computer can sign on anytime, since no password is needed. However with the proper controls in place, you still can restrict their access. If you choose to store your child's password, I would not suggest storing your own, as this would allow your child to sign on your master account and remove restrictions you have place on his/her screen name.

I am including below, some links to some of the above mentioned sites for easy access. E-mail Safety AOL Neighborhood Watch AOL Kids Only Kids WB! Miscellaneous AOL Tips & Tricks

Cleaning Up Your Hard Drive

Web Cache

Your web cache stores world wide web art and graphics. It caches the art on your computer's hard drive. Caching makes web sites you go to often, display faster since the art is already downloaded to your hard drive.  Advanced WWW Preferences let you determine whether you want to cache web page information and how much of your disk space will be used to do this. "Purging the Web Cache" will delete these graphics.  You might want to do this every few months to clear out files you don't need. Purging the Cache is slightly different for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, so follow the instructions depending upon your operating system below.

AOL 3.0 for Windows: Click on Members, Click on Preferences, Click on the WWW Icon., Click on the Advanced Button at the bottom of the Screen. Click on the Purge Cache Button in the Middle of the Screen. Click on OK. Close the window.

AOL 3.0 for Windows 95: Click on Members, Click on Preferences, Click on the WWW Icon.  Click on the Advanced Tab. Click on the Settings button in the middle of the Screen under the Temporary Internet Files Subtitle.  Click on Empty Folder button.  Click on the Yes Box.  Finally Click on OK twice to close the boxes.

Graphics Cache

Sometimes while working on the World Wide Web, your web browser may lock up or just keep searching and searching, but never accessing the website. Usually this problem is a memory or hard drive space problem. Below are some suggestions for regular maintenance to clear out some files you may no longer need stored on your hard drive.

When working online, AOL online art is stored on your computer's hard drive, which makes it faster to enter an area, because the art does not needed to be loaded. But from time to time you should empty this art to rid your computer of old graphics. This can be done by Clicking on Members, then clicking on Preferences. Click on the Graphics Icon. Change the Maximum Disk space to be used for online art to 1 meg. Click on OK. Close all windows and sign off of AOL. Then completely close AOL. You should get a box telling you to wait while the online graphics file is dumped. Then sign back on AOL, Click on Members, Click on Preferences, Click on the Graphics Icon. Reset the Maximum Space for online art to somewhere between 10 and 20 meg, dependending upon how much free hard drive space you have available. Click on the OK button. The first time you re-enter some AOL places, you may notice a slight delay due to uploading of art.

Make sure the "include subdirectories" option is checked, and click on OK. Review the files for one's you want to delete and highlight them, then click DELETE, and answer yes, when prompted about moving to the recycle bin.

For Windows 3.1 users, Open File Manager, Click on FILE, and then on SEARCH. on the first line type ~*.TMP, and on second line, type C:\. Make sure "Search subdirectories" is marked and then click on OK. From the list of TMP files, click on the First one, then scroll to the bottom of the list. Hold down the SHIFT key and click on the last file. This should highlight the entire list. Press DELETE and respond with YES TO ALL.

Instant Messages

Turning IMs on and Off

Want some privacy? It's easy to turn IMs on and off. Click on the Members click on Send an Instant Message, which will bring up a blank IM form. To turn off IMs, address the IM to: $im_off and type at least one character in the message field. To turn IMs back on, repeat the procedure but send the IM to $im_on . With AOL4.0 this can be accomplished by clicking on My AOL, Buddy List, Privacy Preferences, then click the appropriate switch at the bottom to turn IMs off.

To block only certain people from sending you Instant Messages, send an Instant Message to $IM_OFF(SCREENNAME). So if you wanted to block IM's from just me (hypothetically of course) you would Send and IM to: $IM_OFF TecKnoBaby. Make sure you type something in the text area. (Contributed by DeVineDoll)

Adding a little Life to Your Communications

Have you got a friend or relative on the internet that you've been forced to communicate with by Email because you have different Internet Provider Services? Did you know it's possible to send Instant Messages to them anyway? Online communications are a great way to keep in touch especially with your long distance friends. Why not talk on AOL's dime?

There are several services out there that allow you to communicate instantly with your other party. One such service is
AOL Instant Messenger . By having your internet friends download this FREE program, it will be possible for them to send you instant messages as well as you send them special messages. Your friends will have to choose a screen name to communicate with you with and once you know that, you will be able to add them to your buddy list. This service works with for anyone with a internet connection.

The only problem with the service is that sometimes your buddy may feel left out when you are in a chat room and they can't join in since they are not an AOL member. Well there are solutions out there for this too. There are other services that not only allow instant messages, but you can actually visit a chat room with your internet friends. Some of those services available include
ICQ - World's Largest Internet Online Communi... IRC Central - is the ultimate resource for In... mIRC : Homepage of the IRC Chat client mIRC CNET.com - Downloads (ircle for MAC), CNET.com - Visual IRC 97 Internet Relay Chat (IRC) Help. Some of these services let you choose a nickname which is similar to an AOL screen name, however your nickname is not necessarily unique to you.

Another communication option that has recently become available is the Voice Email. This allows users to Record their Email message, for a more personal touch.
SOFTSEEK.COM Welcome to Objective Voice(tm), - Actif Mail 1.5, - Cinemail 2.0 or - Digital Mail 97 2.11 .

Some other options available with the latest technology include OnLine, Real Time Voice Interactions such as offered by - PowWow or AT&T Chat 'N Talk: There are even services available out there that let you receive the text of email messages right over a pager. - Connect2Pager 1.51 - PageGate w/Email, Web and Command... . For those of you who are too tired to type, there are services that will type what you speak such as Dragon Systems Collection . And finally for those of you who want be a bit playful, you could try one of the many avatar chats such as The Palace | Home Page , Worlds Chat(TM) , ! (Virtual Places Universe - Doorway to Adven... or ComicChat
With all these options available, looks like the toughest part of communicating on line could be deciding which medium to use. As a final note, I would like to caution anyone interested in trying out these services. Some of these are not monitored for content as closely as AOL.

Cut and Paste

Tocut and paste an IM or web page reference, highlight the text that you want to copy, click on Edit, Click on Copy. This text has now been saved to your clipboard. Now, depending upon where you want to paste the text to, ( EMail, Notepad, Wordpad, etc) open the particular function. Then click on Edit and Click on Paste. This works for Hyper Links to, but you have to be careful to start highlighting the link from one of the ends, rather than activating the link.

Saving IMs to a File

If you want to savean IM conversation you have had with someone for future reference, or suppose you want to save a web page, highlight the IM box or web page, and click on File, Click on Save, and give the file a name when the Save File box opens, then Click OK. Be aware that some web pages will be saved only as the text without the graphics. I highly recommend BPS power tools for those of you who want to document everything you type or receive. Power tools can be set to automatically record all IMs and all chats, along with a load of other features. BPS SoftWare IIt also makes blocking IMs and Buddy Chats a snap. After a trial period the software requires a registration fee of approximately $25. This tip might make some a little more careful about what they type.

Web Page Resources

AOL allows you up to 2 Meg of Web Space for each screen name you have. So it is possible to create a web page for each or just one large web page linking the page to the other space. Your personal webspace URL address is located at http://members.aol.com/[YOUR SCREEN NAME] This web space is free to AOL members, however if you are interested in registering a web domain for more space, you can go to keyword Prime Host Why a Web Page? This is mainly for those of you interested in putting your business on the web and there will be fees charged.

For online users who aren't familar with the HTML language, AOL has several tools available that make designing your little home page, as easy as pie. If you happen to have word processing packages such as Corel WordPerfect or Office 97, there are some really neat templates available for quick web page designing.

The first of these tools is
AOL's Personal Publisher which can be used to create a very basic web page. Unfortunately this tool is not available as of yet for those of you using the new AOL 4.0 version or for Mac Users. Another version of Personal Publisher is due out shortly that should be available for those of you left out.

By going to key word Personal Publisher, you can easily get those creative juices going on designing your web page. It may require downloading of the publishing tool if this is your first time using it. From there, just click on Create a Web Page. This will walk you through the procedures such as choosing a template, naming your page, choosing a background, adding images or your personal picture, and some basic information. This will get you started and from there you can add to your page.

For those Mac Users and those on AOL 4.0 you can use Welcome to the world of AOLpress which is a tool for Designing and Publishing your web page. I strongly recommend downloading AOLPress. It includes templates as well as a tutorial for walking you through your first creative effort. AOL Press is a wonderful tool for creating and viewing your web page before publishing it. The tutorial walks you through creating frames, tables, mini-webs adding images, adding sounds, linking to other pages or linking to other web addresses.

As a final note, I'd like to extend a word of caution. Any published web pages are accessible not only to AOL users, but also anyone with a web connection. Please be careful about how much information you publish. Also, if you decide to publish graphics or other links, make sure you give proper credit to the author, when required.

Adding A Counter to Your Web Page

Adding a counter to your web pages lets you keep track of how many times your web page has been accessed by someone on the web. To add a basic counter add the following HTML statement to your page:

<src="/cgi-bin/counter?</FONT">
screenname">) Replace screenname with your AOL screen name.

If you happen to be using AOL Press Publishing,
AOLPress keyword page follow the instructions below.

Open your web page. Go to Tools->Show HTML. Type in <src="/cgi -bin/counter?</FONT">
screenname">) where you want the counter to be. Click to close window and choose Apply. Choose File->Save from the page window.

For those of you using AOL's Personal Publisher II, Personal Publisher use the following instructions:

Goto keyword PP2. Pick EDIT. Pick the page you want your counter on. Pick EDIT PAGE. Click on the HTML button. Type in your counter tag as follows: <src="/cgi-bin/counter?</FONT">screenname"> Be SURE to replace the word screenname with your real screenname. If your screenname has spaces, eliminate them. Hit Publish. Counters don't work in PP2's "View" mode and you will get an error saying "Unable to locate c:\cgi-bin". Just ignore that and publish.

Adding A Guestbook to Your Web Page

The guest book feature allows you to collect information from people browsing your web pages and save it in a file. You define what information to collect by creating a HTML form and you define the format of the saved information by creating a template or you can download a predesigned template. A member retrieves your form, fills it out and presses the submit button. A members.aol.com server uses the template and forms data to format and save the information. If you are familiar with HTML language, you could use the following link to set up your guestbook Description of /cgi-bin/guestbook . If not, I would suggest downloading one of the templates at the following link. OnTheNet HTML Templates Once you have downloaded and unzipped your template, open the guestbook.htm (sometimes called gbook.htm) and change the HTML where it says Your ScreenName to your screen name. Save the file. Then add the link to this file on your homepage. Make sure you upload to your web page, all the files contained in the zipped file. If you have problems setting up your guestbook, you might want to try the following link which contains a tutorial on the subject. Adding a Guestbook

If you've updated a web page and are having a hard time trying to view the updates, it is probably because your browser is pulling up the old version from your cache files. Meta Tags

Most of you have done a search on the web and received masses of results, more than you ever wanted. Have you ever wondered how in the heck those search engines find all those links? Well most search engines crawl the web searching web sites for days indexing pages. Just the use of one key word on your site could create an index. One way to make sure the right people are directed to your site and your page is not lost in the masses by being listed as the 1,999,999th match is to use Meta Tags. Meta Tags can be embedded (hidden behind the scenes) in your web page to help those search engines index your page properly. There are several ways of using these tags.

To embed a Meta Tag to your page, put the following into the HTML code in the
Header section of your page.

KEYWORDS" CONTENT="put a few keywords for your site here">
Use this tag to list words others might use to search for your site

DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="Put a short description of your site here.">
Use this tag to give the user a brief description of your site.<
