MG TF HARDTOP HOIST AND STORAGE
The Hoist
Remote control 240 volt. The steel cable has been removed from the drum and replaced with 2 cords. Part of the side panel has been cut away to allow the cords vertical access. (The hoist is designed for overhead installation). The 2 mounting brackets are bolted to the garage wall.
Hooks
6 hooks screwed into the ceiling joists. These are the type used for garden swings. They require a pre-drilled hole 50mm deep and 7mm in diameter.
Pulleys
6 pulleys, 4 with closed cheeks and 2 with open cheeks, these can be purchased from shops specialising in climbing.
The 2 open cheek pulleys had to be opened a bit more to accommodate the tubing.
2 hooks are used to anchor the 2 cords.
Lifting Rails
The rails are cut from 25mm square section steel tubing. 2 x 4 feet lengths for the front and 1 x 2 feet length for the rear. Pipe insulation attached and secured with electrical tape. M10 nuts and bolts to secure pulleys.
The rear rail has 2 adjustable straps with hooks attached.
M10 threaded rods secured to front top rail.
Pipe insulation fitted to the M10 threaded rods to protect the paint when lowering into position.
Lower front rail
Attach the 2 hooks at the rear and adjust straps for an even lift.
Preparing For Lift Off
Release the 4 catches and the heated rear window connection.
The Storage Box
A wooden frame was first screwed to the ceiling joists. 4 plywood sides are screwed to the ceiling frame. Square battens are screwed and glued to the left and right hand sides. The front and rear sides will be screwed to the battens. (Not glueing the front and rear sides will enable the whole assembly to be taken down at a later date if required). An additional frame is added to the bottom edges of all 4 sides to accommodate a bottom cover. The bottom cover consists of 3 x 2 feet wide MDF panels reinforced with battens, the centre panel overlapping the other 2. Any small gaps are sealed. 2 sponges cover the cable entry holes. Dust, spiders and other creepy-crawlies should be kept out. The sponges will act as air filters for ventilation. The botom cover is held in place with wing-nuts which enable quick single-handed removal.
You are more than welcome to copy this idea. Remember all hooks and screws to the ceiling are screwed into the centres of joists. I will not be held responsible for any accidents, mishaps or damage.
