Notes on a Solar Eclipse
A look at one of nature's most awesome events
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow on our planet. This can only happen at new moon. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind the Earth into Earth's shadow. This can only happen at full moon.
Total Solar Eclipse of August 11 1999
The final total solar eclipse of the 20th century (there is none in 2000) is an event for which most Europeans have been waiting some 38 years. Except for the 1990 eclipse in Finland, the Moon's shadow has not touched the European Continent since 1961.
