Although the science of orbital mechanics permits the prediction of solar eclipses with astonishing precision, our incomplete understanding of meteorology represents the flip side of the eclipse coin. Weather forecasting for eclipse day remains an endeavor filled with uncertainty. Nevertheless the topic warrants careful consideration since favorable sky conditions are essential to successful eclipse observations.

Mean August cloud cover (in percent) along the eclipse track as determined by satellite measurements and analysis taken over an eight year period (1983 - 1990). Measurements were collected for rectangular areas 5° by 5° and represent the large scale characteristics of the area.
