Kevin
Brown is a highly respected professional
recording artist, writer and performer
of over 30 years standing. He
is now passing on his vast range
of knowledge and experience to
both beginners and experienced
players alike in this first ever
UK based slide school.
There is no substitute for learning
in a ‘live’ situation
and these courses are intended
to be run in a relaxed and friendly
atmosphere where thoughts and
ideas can be discussed with Kevin.
No books or videos can replace
the spontanaeity that occurs when
like minded individuals gather
to learn new ideas and improve
their skills.
Prior to setting up the school
my thoughts had often turned to
how students could be given a
good understanding of the fundamental
points that could help build the
foundations needed to help explore
fully the fascinating world of
slide guitar.
Peoples understanding of what
slide guitar actually is can be
very varied, to some the raw Delta
style of Son House is the holy
grail, to others the silky smooth
roots style of Ry Cooder or Kelly
Joe Phelps is the main source
of inspiration.
It is the work of these highly
skilled artists that empowers
us with the knowledge of what
can actually be achieved with
a slide, be it brass, glass or
steel. For many students this
‘dawning of a new playing
style’ is captivating and
many often immerse themselves
to great depths in order to ‘unlock’
the mysteries of new tunings and
slide control.
Interest in Slide guitar playing
has grown worldwide and at slideguitarschool
we try to prepare you for this
fascinating journey by giving
you an insight into the true value
of this exciting new array of
sounds that are available to the
budding slide player.
We give you small easily understandable
building blocks which you can
use to help explore the very wide
range of styles by players past
and present.
Most of all the experience of
being at slideguitarschool is
truly uplifting and inspiring.
We pride ourselves in giving you
access to the thoughts and expertise
of some of our most outstanding
slide players.
I hope you enjoy being at Slideschool,
it has been a joy for me to design
and deliver.

THE COURSE
The course at slideguitar school has
been designed to run on two levels,
Intermediate and beginners.
| |
Level
1
- This is for players who have
had little experience of slide
playing or open tuning. The course
is designed in simple stages with
both open D and G tunings are
explained.
First basic steps in fingerpicking,
single string scales, melodies,
and composition
Simple scales are explored as
well as basic chord shapes and
the use of harmonic pairs to create
well known tunes. |
| |
Level
2
For players who have some experience
of open tunings and basic slide
knowledge. Alternate thumb patterns,
walking bass parts, single line
delta runs, as well as hill country
single chord techniques, also
the development of Harmonic pairs
are explored and developed. At
this level we also explore shuffle
rhythms and alternate rhythm/lead
techniques. |
| |
Level 3
We look at new tunings for slide
guitar (Minor, major 6th) also
examine fake slanting (lap steel
styles) Behind the bar fretting,
hammer ons and pull offs using
the slide. Students learn how
to merge Hawaiian blues and country
licks into original compositions,
Students also uncover the lost
art of playing in different keys
whilst tuned to open D |
Whether you are on the beginners or
intermediate course you will receive
tuition from both Kevin and his guest.
The day begins with registration, this
is the perfect upportunity to meet other
sliders and exchange thoughts on all
things Slide. Tea and coffee is available
upon your arrival.
The teaching opens with Kevin’s
highly entertaining introduction to
the World of Slide guitar, his inspirations
and thoughts provide an insight into
why he set up the school and how he
sees it as a vital part in helping to
pin down the fundamental skills required
to explore the fascination new world
of slide guitar.
The first tuition session then takes
place with either Kevin or the guest
musician. The tuition is aided by full
course notes which can be followed on
the day and then taken home for further
study bringing the student up to the
next level at the following Slideschool.
Or the student may wish to stay at one
level for a while over a few courses.
The content is never repeated so there
is no danger of going over the same
old ground.
Lunch is then provided within the Institution
in the form of a buffet. We provide
an hour and a half for lunch in order
to do a little shopping or even visit
our Sponsors ‘Vintage and Rare
Guitars’ who are situated just
around the corner.
The afternoon begins with a workshop
with the guest slider followed by the
second tuition session, this time ‘reversing’
the tutor.
The plenary session brings us all together
for a final opportunity to quiz the
tutors or each other on any slide, performing
or recording related queries.
The classes then retire until the evening
concert when Kevin performs what is
usually a sell out concert with his
guest for the day.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
|
The following list
of players include those who have
stretched and developed the many
styles in this artform. These are
the ‘colours’ in your
palette, or the tricks in your toolbox.
We at slide
school strive to help you to understand
how these sounds came about and
how to re-create them, but
more importantly we give you the
very basic foundations upon which
you can build and form your own
personal style. Armed with this
knowledge, the student can then
forge their own way and hopefully
leave their mark on us all as others
have done in the past, forever adding
ideas to the fascinating world of
Slide Guitar.

BLUES
Son House, Fred Mcdowell, Bukka White,
Blind Willie Mc’tell. Tampa
Red and Robert Johnson. Big Joe Williams,
Blind Willie Johnson, Charlie Patton
COUNTRY, BLUEGRASS
Check out Mike Auldridge, Jerry Douglas
and other exponents of the modern
bluegrass style. Don’t overlook
some of the great lap steel western
swing player like Leon Mcauliffe from
Bob Wills and the Texas playboys.
Look out for Howard White lap steel
player for cowboy copas and recording
artist in his own right. He played
some of the most beautifull lap steel
pieces I have ever heard and certainly
influenced my own style a great deal,
hardly any vibrato but a great amount
of feeling.
HAWAIIAN
The Grand master, Sol Hoopii had bucketfuls
of licks, many of which can be played
in the upright position. King Bennie
Nawahi and many others are an absolute
must if one is going to absorb a broad
range of slide styles.
BLUES ROCK
GOSPEL
Johhny Winter, Duane Allman, Lowell
George, George Harrison, Bonnie Rait,
John Fahey, Kelly Joe Phelps, Alvin
Youngblood Heart, Ben Harper, Mike
Bloomfield all helped keep slide alive
throughout the 70’s to the present
day.
WORLD/CONTEMPORARY
Ry Cooder, Debashi Bhattacharya, Vishwa
Mohan Bhatt. Kelly Joe Phelps, Ben
Harper Alvin Youngblood Heart, Leo
Kotke, Ellen Mcllwaine have all helped
stretched the genre and show us new
and exciting ways of exploring slide
guitar.
Originality is the keyword and every
name mentioned above has something
new and different to offer, that’s
why it makes sense to study these
people as part of your ‘slide
school’ education. Here at Slideschool
we pay great homage to the past, acknowledge
the present and hope to encourage
students to seek out their own future
armed with all they have learned at
Slideguitarschool. |
