Film Noir: An Encyclopedic Reference to the American Style is the first book-length study of the entire "classic period" of the noir movement and was originally published in a hardcover edition by the Overlook Press in 1979. The completely revised 4th Edition will incorporate a second section focused on Neo-noir. Since its first printing Film Noir has been the preeminent reference to the original movement with its credits, synopses, and comments on movies of the classic period. The new hardcover will add over 300 additional titles to both the classic period and Neo-noir sections. In the same over-sized format with over 100 illustrations, it is scheduled for publication in 2008.

Among the new contributors to the Encyclopedic Reference will be scholars and social commentators who have written or edited individual studies of the noir movement.

Revised Chronology and Filmmakers lists will be included in each part, as well as completely updated and annotated Bibliography and Index. The Contents page of Film Noir: An Encyclopedia Reference to the American Style, 4th Edition is reproduced below.
