Jackalope

Jackalope

(Lepus californicus jacalopus)

The jackalope is appears to be an Awakened form of the jackrabbit.

Identification North America's largest hare, jackalopes measure about 0.8 meters tall, the tail is between 50-112 mm and the ears are 10-13 cm long, with deer-like antlers. As it is an Awakened true hare, the jackalope is lankier and leaner than a rabbit, has longer ears and legs, and its leverets are born fully furred and open-eyed. Both sexes look alike, but the female is the larger of the two sexes.
Magic Capability Innate
Habits Jackalopes are omnivorous, preferring meat to plants. Legend suggests that the jackalope is a cross between a pygmy deer and a carnivorous hare. However ludicrous this sounds, genetic testing has proven the presence of strands of DNA from both the black-tailed jackrabbit, L. californicus, and a deer, though testing is as yet unconcluded, and researchers have not discovered the type of deer specifically.
Jackalopes appeared shortly before the Awakening, coming from black-tailed jackrabbit. Since then, they have spread the boundaries of their domain only slightly, and rely on friendly NAN nations to keep hunters at bay. Like black-tailed jackrabbits, jackalopes rely on speed and camouflage. However, in addition to their normal skills in these two areas, they have magically enhanced powers. They also have the ability to mimic (meta)human speech.
Black-tailed jackrabbits inhabit desert scrubland, prairies, farmlands and dunes and moors. They favor arid regions and areas of short grass rangeland from sea level to about 3,800 m. Many different vegetation types are used, including sagebrush-creosote bush, mesquite-snakeweed and juniper-big sagebrush. They also frequent the agricultural land in California where they are a major pest of crops and fruit trees.
Commentary As with other Lepus species, L. c. jacalopus often serves as food for (meta)humans. They are protected in NAN lands because they are exceedingly rare -- only one in two hundred black-tailed jackrabbits mutated into jackalopes. In California, however, hunting is encouraged in the same manor as it is for their unAwakaned cousins and for the same reason -- each year they cause millions of nuyen in damages to crop yields.
