MIND PREY - John Sandford (audiobook)
Mind Prey is another of John Sandford's Lucas Davenport novels. This time Davenport must solve the kidnapping of psychiatrist Andi Manette and her two daughters. The kidnapper, a former patient of Andi's, is one of the few patients that ever scared her. With a love for puzzles and electronic games, the kidnapper begins taunting Davenport with clues and threats to his captives. Davenport must follow the electronic trail and find Andi and her daughters before it's too late.
Sandford has written another excellent psychological thriller. The kidnapper is a true psychopath, enjoying the game he's playing way too much. The interaction between Davenport and the kidnapper is top-notch. Chilling and suspenseful, Mind Prey is a winner.
The audio version is abridged, 2 tapes, published by Simon & Schuster, and skillfully read by John Shea. His performance is smooth and fully captures the evil of the kidnapper. Shea alters his voice slightly to differentiate the characters, and his pacing helps build the suspense. Unfortunately, the audio suffers from a choppy abridgement characterized by some of the deductions Davenport is able to make while the listener is privy to a minimal amount of the evidence. Still, the audio is well worth listening.
