Web Links for South Africans Abroad

Special Announcement (the rest of the page is below this text, just as it was before)

When I started South Africans Abroad in mid-97 there was only one other site out there anything like it, and no site with much advice. For several years this page served a huge purpose for South African expats, soon to be ex-expats and non-South Africans interested in South Africa, and I received a tonne of emails. With each email the page grew, and it kept growing. For many years I always ensured that I had more links in the areas I chose to cover than anyone else, and some of my links could only be found here -- like links to South African clubs and expat sites. Many of the next wave of South African expat sites shamelessly copied my links and overall layout, which I minded not at all (not an ego thing for me) -- and besides I soon had more links than them again as I continuously monitored the explosion of South African web-pages. I have even seen my artwork plagiarised across the South African web.

Well, these days I am doing many other things and writing far more seriously. I am writing short stories and working on two books. This link library is tough to maintain (links die all the time) and I have little time now to answer emails. Similarly I now update this page rarely and this also does not sit right with me. The motivation is also gone because today there are loads of other quality South African link libraries out there, and many have gone on to fantastic new heights.

Since helping my fellow South Africans was the primary purposes of the page -- and I succeeded beyond my expectations -- the reason for South Africans Abroad has diminished. With so much other help out there, I no longer feel that it is needed, so I've decided to retire this web site -- unless someone out there wants to give it a new home. I will swap to a primarily text web site at a new URL and will likely at least keep the text advice available there, unless someone comes up with a better idea. Right now page retirement is set for the end of 2004.

Emails on this topic are welcome, but be warned that I might not be able to reply personally (I will try, and will reply to those with strong ideas).

I am glad that these pages helped so many South Africans and I'll never forget the thousands of emails through the years. It's been a rush. Best to you all.

Ngiyabonga,
Grant Kruger
