OAK GROVE AND DISCGOLF HISTORY
OAK GROVE PARK - Pasadena, CA is the one that started it all. The World's first disc golf course is still one of the best. This course was originally designed in 1975. Baskets were installed here in early 1976, making Oak Grove the World's First Discgolf Course. Word spread like wildfire and there was tremendous crowds at Oak Grove. It was a huge step for LA County Parks and Recreation, which has not been known to cater to alternative sports. Now Southern California boasts some of the finest and most played disc golf courses in the country. We owe it all to Oak Grove and it's success. Oak Grove still remains one of the premier disc golf courses in California. We place it right up there with Delavega, La Mirada, Orangevale, and the other great courses here in California. Oak Grove will test your game and accuracy.
Oak Grove Park, now called Hahamonga Watershed Park, well according to the sign out front. But just like 3-Com Park, the locals refuse to call it that. It has and will always be THE GROVE. A legendary group of PDGA Golfers named the Gophers used to call Oak Grove home in the 70's. If you were a Gopher, like current PDGA distance record holder Scott Stokely (656'2"), or know of the groups' history, please e mail us. We would like to add a paragraph about the legendary team here.
Disc sports were on a upswing in the late 70's, much like they are today. We attended an event over the hill at the Rose Bowl in 1977 and 1978 staring many frisbee pros and disciplines. Ashley Whippet and the Beach Boys headlined one event I remember. These events were drawing over 50,000 people and making headlines all the time. Many different disc sports were demonstrated including Disc Golf. Many disc games have come and gone, you rarely hear of an Ultimate or Freestyle event anymore. Disc Golf courses began springing up everywhere in the US in the 80's. Construction of courses then slowed, but not the popularity of the game. Disc golf is more popular today than ever. We have noticed many more players on our courses just this last year. We think it is great !! We love the competition! We just hope it does not get too popular. So Cal Discgolf remains free, we would like to keep it that way. If you are at the course keep your eye out for Joe Hart in a White Chevy P/U with campershell. Go to him and kick a buck into the "coursefund". Tell him you heard about the course here on the Internet!!
Flying spinning discs create lift, the force is called the Bernouli effect. The faster you spin a disc, the more lift it creates and the farther it will fly. Many studies have been done on the physics of the spinning or flying disc. Here you will soon find links to these studies which might help you in your game. We aim to keep updating this site and want you back often. If you have any comments or suggestions with the site, please contact us and we will get back to you.
