The Hexagrams

           

  The full interpretation of a hexagram relies on a 'commentary' of each line in its specific position in that hexagram: 64 hexagrams, each with 6 lines results in 384 'commentaries'!  No attempt is made to re-create these commentaries here, however, the table below summarises the commentaries, hopefully maintaining the meaning.



Ch'ien
1. The Creative
HEAVEN above,
HEAVEN below
Persevere, and use creative effort within the Laws of Nature in order to succeed. Good Fortune is indicated if you do!


K'un
2. The Receptive
EARTH above,
EARTH below
Listen to others, and yield calmly to their  advice in order to return to a successful path. Troubles will lessen, and Good Fortune is indicated if you do!


Chun
3. Difficulty at the Beginning
WATER above,
THUNDER below
It is good to continue, but slowly and with small objectives, while allowing the 'big picture' to become clear by itself. Deal with problems one at a time in order to control the 'chaos'.


Mêng
4. Immaturity (Youthful Folly)
MOUNTAIN above,
WATER below
Be cautious with everything, but particularly ensure others are being honest with you.  Check your facts carefully, nurture honesty, and only give advice when you are really sure!


Hsü
5. Waiting
WATER above,
HEAVEN below
Wait for the time to become right for action.  Success will follow, but only if you are patient.  Be truthful with yourself, and strong in your objectives, while you wait.


Sung
6. Conflict

There are obstacles wherever you look.   Take advice from people with more experience, and be careful to watch your stability and security.  Take great care: keep what you have instead of looking for 'more'!


Shih
7. The Army

You need to show Leadership and respect to those who rely on you.  Build confidence and trust from others. Be careful of envious 'rebellion'.  Success is indicated if you do!


Pi
8. Holding Together (Union)

EARTH below
Honesty and sincerity will lead to success, if you are able to cooperate.  Any hesitation in your honesty will lead to misfortune. Good Fortune is indicated if you do!


Hsiao Ch'u
9. The Taming Power of the Small
WIND above,
HEAVEN below
Conserve your energy, and gather things you will need for your future plans to be successful.  Do nothing more than be patient and flexible.


10. Treading (Conduct)
HEAVEN above,
LAKE below
Tread gently and carefully, and act with humility only after careful planning, and then with caution. Good Fortune is indicated if you do!


T'ai
11. Peace (Contentment)
EARTH above,
HEAVEN below
Success is linked to tranquillity.   This is a time of peace, prosperity, contentment, blossoming and good fortune.   Be flexible, but be true to yourself.


P'i
12. Standstill (Stagnation)
HEAVEN above,
EARTH below
Beware of pride without substance.   Be careful of a lack of harmony. There will be a delay before you are successful.


T'ung Jên
13. Fellowship with People
HEAVEN above,
FLAME below
Partnerships and marriages will be successful.  All will be well if you act with honesty and flexibility, but cooperate and are steadfast.


Ta Yu
14. Possession in Great Measure

HEAVEN below
A small initial setback will be overcome, and will lead to easy success.  Show respect for others, and be wary of becoming lazy and arrogant, otherwise you risk losing what you have.  Act wisely, and all will be well!


Ch'ien
15. Modesty

Equal partnerships benefit. Act with humility to all people; restore balance between excess and dearth in order to be successful.


16. Enthusiasm

Everything is as it should be!   Take opportunities as they arise, and act with conviction, but make sure you do not appear over-confident or 'immodest'.

17. Following

THUNDER below
There is good fortune at present, which should be enjoyed without the need to force further change.  The cycle of growth and decline is present, but use any decline as a period to strengthen and prepare for future opportunities.


Ku
18. Removing Corruption (Decay)
MOUNTAIN above,
WIND below
There is a choice to be made, which could end in success or failure.  Take time in your decisions, act carefully, avoiding new commitments.  Care  will produce success, with some risk of failure.  Avoid decisions on partnerships or marriage


Lin
19. Approach (Becoming Great)
EARTH above,
LAKE below
Troubles will diminish, and recognition will follow, with many benefits becoming available to you if you treat others kindly and with modesty.  Problems are indicated later, and success may be short-lived, so enjoy it as it happens.


Kuan
20. Contemplation (View)
WIND above,
EARTH below
The immediate future is difficult, with you feeling 'blown around' and unable to achieve anything.  Improvement will come.   Be patient, and use this time to observe, examine (including yourself), gain wisdom, and plan. Improvement will come.


Shih Ho
21. Biting Through (Judging)
FLAME above,
THUNDER below
Difficulties you face can be 'bitten through', leading to success and good fortune.  Be clear and strong in your objectives, and you will succeed.  Then avoid bad temper or harsh words that could produce problems.


Pi
22. Grace (Adornment)
MOUNTAIN above,
FLAME below
Good fortune follows from firm but flexible  action, to produce a happy time for you..  Remember that adornment is beautiful but not essential, so ensure the reality of the future is not hidden by the 'rose-coloured' tinge of the present.


Po
23. Splitting Apart (Disintegration)
MOUNTAIN above,
EARTH below
The current difficulties will end in the natural cycle of regeneration.  Be patient, and continue to work hard in preparation for the good times to follow.


Fu
24. Return (The Turning Point)
EARTH above,
THUNDER below
Everything is set for the revival to being.  The present troubles, sadness and confusion will give way to the improvements which are already happening, unseen.  Only patience is needed.


Wu Wang
25. Innocence (The Unexpected)
HEAVEN above
THUNDER below
Be ready for unexpected events, and be flexible in how you handle them.  Rigid, inflexible plans should be avoided.   Act naturally, honourably and truthfully, without greed, ambition or desire, as would the 'Innocent'.


Ta Ch'u
26. The Taming Power of the Great
MOUNTAIN above,
HEAVEN below
Great inner strength and wisdom already exist in preparation for a new path.  Current obstacles will disappear; lesser ones appear. Considerable work will need to be done, and there is need to win over, rather than subdue, those who will oppose you.

27. Providing Nourishment (The Corners of the Mouth)
MOUNTAIN above,
THUNDER below
Good fortune will follow a period of hard work, if you apply yourself with moderation and humility.  Seek fulfilment, and seek advice from the 'wise', but act within the natural laws, and avoid 'using' people.


Ta Kuo
28. Great Heaviness
LAKE above,
WIND/WOOD below
Avoid committing to new plans, and be patient: things will improve. Avoid being arrogant or aggressive, but effort will bring better results than ambition; ambition better results than ability or means. 


K'an
29. The Abysmal (Pitfalls)

WATER below
This is a time to be still and conserve energy as there are many dangers in your way.  Don't try to deal with all difficulties: it is not necessary.  Be careful and patient. Find the 'natural' course and follow it: like water in a stream.


Li
30. The Clinging

Be calm, keep in control, and focus on your plans  although everything is changing around you. Be flexible, but only change as really necessary.  Good fortune follows if you exercise self-control.


Hsien
31. Influence (Wooing)

MOUNTAIN below
Be patient, sensitive to the needs of others, and remain strong in your resolve, and good fortune will follow.  Be flexible, and a new commitment will be successful.  Act only when the time is right.


Hêng
32. Duration (Marriage)
THUNDER above
WIND below
A difficult situation should end. Partnerships and marriage will endure and strengthen with time. Follow a natural course to be successful.


Tun
33. Retreat (Withdrawal)
HEAVEN above,
MOUNTAIN below
Orderly withdrawal is necessary, but avoid 'running away', rather: do not confront those who oppose you.  Conserve your energies, do not start new ventures, and consolidate existing ones with extreme care.


Ta Chuang
34. The Power of the Great
THUNDER above,
HEAVEN below
A time of progress and good fortune, when others follow your example.  Act justly and wisely, not only strongly.   Follow your actions to their end.


Chin
35. Progress
FLAME above,
EARTH below
Opportunities appear for rapid progress in many areas.  Act justly and humbly in order to succeed.  This is also a time to think of others, not only 'self'.


Ming I
36. Darkening of the Light
EARTH above
FLAME below
Things do not go well, but do not become down-hearted.  Be careful who you trust, and act with caution.  Be patient, things will improve, make plans in preparation, but  try to hide your disappointment until the improvement comes.


Chia Jên
37. The Family (The Clan)
WIND above,
FLAME below
This concerns all aspects of family relationships. Do not act in isolation, but in co-ordination with close family and friends.   Act morally, justly, and with respect for others.  Be sure to consolidate close relationships.


K'uei
38. Opposition
FLAME above,
LAKE below
Treat others generously in order to turn conflict and suspicion into shared success.  The differences between opposing views can be small: look for ways to unite them constructively and harmoniously.  Disaster can be avoided with care.


Chien
39. Obstruction
WATER above,
MOUNTAIN below
Difficulties surround you, but are part of an essential process.  Be constant in your objectives, but do not apply force to achieve them: be patient and think before acting


Hsieh
40. Deliverance
THUNDER above,
WATER below
Good and improving fortune is to arrive when you free yourself from current problems.  Deal with your difficulties quickly but gently: success has not arrived yet.  Remember the lessons learnt, but do not be a slave to the past.


Sun
41. Decrease
MOUNTAIN above,
LAKE below
Avoid excesses, and preserve what you have.  You may need to accept a loss, but do so easily: greater benefit will replace the loss.  Be restrained but flexible, and act with sincerity.


I
42. Increase

THUNDER below
This is a good time for increased activity and prosperity, and maybe travel over water.  Make the most of this time because it will pass.  Be generous and do not seek unfair advantage over others.


Kuai
43. Break-through (Resoluteness)
LAKE above,
HEAVEN below
There is danger which must be acknowledged, and actions taken in quiet ways with the support of others.  Greater prosperity will follow if you act fairly and with honour, and are cautious in your actions.


Kou
44. Coming to Meet  (Encountering)
HEAVEN above,
WIND below
Do not follow someone else's path. Be careful of dangerous situations: deceit and hidden objectives will be harmful, although honesty and honourable actions could be beneficial.  Learn from these situations for the future.


Ts'ui
45. Gathering Together (Massing)
LAKE above,
EARTH below
A harmonious balance requires a gathering together with others, although you should only take advice from one other.   Be prepared for your inner calm to be tested, and be ready to act if things get out of control.


Shêng
46. Pushing Upwards
EARTH above,
WIND, WOOD below
Growth may take time, but will produce success and good rewards.  Do not become lazy or arrogant, and be prepared to work hard to consolidate your gain: growth will not continue forever.


K'un
47. Oppression (Exhaustion)
LAKE above,
WATER below
Use your inner resolve and strength to face the difficulties ahead.  Losses which you suffer may be necessary to show what is truly important.  Be silent, and be watchful for deceit and false flattery.


Ching
48. The Well
WATER above,
WIND, WOOD below
The Well of Human Nature contains your understanding, based on past experience of yourself and others.  Use the understanding to ensure you stay on a natural path.  Things are good, but be watchful for change.


Ko
49. Revolution (Fundamental Change)
LAKE above,
FLAME below
Significant change should occur, bringing with it good opportunities.  Be wary of acting only with materialistic interest, but act carefully and with sincerity.  Good benefits will result if you do!


Ting
50. The Great Bowl (Sacred Vessel)
FLAME above,
WIND, WOOD below
Material and spiritual success surround you in harmony.  Maintain balance and understanding of the world in your actions, and new and existing projects will progress well.


Chên
51. Thunder (Shock)
THUNDER above,
THUNDER below
After a brief (but significant) period of turmoil, possibly with news conveying a 'shock', this should be a period of success and plenty.  Calm will follow the 'storm'.  Be wary of gossip causing problems.


Kên
52. Keeping Still
MOUNTAIN above,
MOUNTAIN below
This is a time to wait an be patient. Nothing can be achieved by action, although you should continue to work quietly in the background..  Avoid new partnerships, but be true to existing ones.


Chien
53. Development (Gradual Progress)
WIND, WOOD above,
MOUNTAIN below
Work patiently and gradually towards your objectives.  Results will be on a firm foundation, so should withstand storms to come.  Plan well, be honest and truthful, and all will be well.


Kuei Mei
54. The Marrying Maiden (Love)
THUNDER above,
LAKE below
Be cautious and be prepared to settle for less, or to back down, if necessary.  Be sure that you are not seduced by the superficial or the short term, but look for truth and objectivity.  Do not 'bite off more than you can chew'!


Fêng
55. Abundance (Fullness)
THUNDER above,
FLAME below
Good fortune will follow, leading to abundance and prosperity.  Use this abundance to prepare for the hard times which may follow. This time and abundance may also be used to identify new goal and plan for reaching them.


56. Travel (The Seeker)
FLAME above,
MOUNTAIN below
Like the 'Fool' in Tarot, this indicates starting a journey, with lessons to be learned.  Attempts to reach the destination too quickly will fail, so move slowly.  Concentrate on each step you take before progressing to the next one.


Sun
57. The Gentle (The Penetrating)
WIND, WOOD above,
WIND, WOOD below
Be flexible and gentle, but get to the heart of problems.  Being steadfast will produce results, but don't push. Have clear objectives, and act honourably to achieve success.


Tui
58. The Joyous
LAKE above,
LAKE below
There is good news, and good fortune.   Your joy and inner strength attracts those who wish to partner you.  Be humble and avoid arrogance and talking too much about your success if you wish this to continue.


Huan
59. Dispersion (The Dissolving)
WIND above,
WATER below
Follow a 'middle' path, and avoid being forced too far away from it, if you wish to be successful. Work hard and with determination, and remember to be reasonable.  You may meet people from your past looking for a spiritual bond.


Chieh
60. Limitation (Due Measure)
WATER above,
LAKE below
Stay calm and turn the negative into the positive using common sense.  Be wise and think ahead, and don't be daunted by obstacles in your way or limitations placed upon you.  Success will come if you do!


Chung Fu
61. Inner Truth
WIND above,
LAKE below
Learn to be happy with yourself and your life, as you plan for the future.  Material and practical issues will not be so successful, but your peace lies within.  You are well-liked, so communicating well will bring some success.


Hsiao Kuo
62. Preponderance of the  Small
THUNDER above,
MOUNTAIN below
Pay attention to detail, as success will come in small ways.  Do not be over-ambitious, but be modest and conscientious in order to achieve results.  Be patient before starting on large projects: now is not a good time for them.


Chi Chi
63. Order (After Completion)
WATER above,
FLAME below
There is good fortune, but this is not a time to relax.  Be sure to consolidate what you have, or have gained.  Act with caution and strive to maintain balance.


Wei Chi
64. Transition (Before Completion)
FLAME above,
WATER below
The time is not yet right for you to act, so be patient: the transition from chaos to order is not yet complete.  You are following the right path, but avoid disputes, and success will come to you in time.
