to Know what Happens.
It’s nighttime in the Tran Ky, South Vietnam, 1969. A group of Marines are
walking through a village. Suddenly they start to take fire and a few men go
down. The men that didn't get shot fall back. There is still one man that is
injured, but alive, in between the Americans and Vietcong. A chaplain then
starts to run toward the injured. He is given the men their last right when he
is shot and killed. One of the still injured men is asking for help. The scene
jumps ahead to where a woman is laying on the floor of an alley asking for help.
A Marine is kneeling above her when a police car comes. They tell him to step
away from the lady and the Marine says it's his wife and she needs an ambulance.
They tell him to step away again and he does.
A detective is leading Harm and Bud in a hospital. He says
the man is a Sargent Major in the Marines, Krohn. He was found hovering above
his wife with a brick lying a few feet away from them. She has a concussion
right now but the doctors said she'll recover. The police arrived right on time.
A few minutes later and she could have died. Bud asks if she's said anything
yet. The detective says no. Harm asks if Krohn said anything. The detective says
just that he didn't do it. She didn't come home on time so he went out looking
for her. He found her in an ally, 80 miles from their home. Harm says the Navy
usually likes to prosecute their own. The detective says he'll send over the
paper work later today.
At Headquarters Harm is telling the Admiral about Krohn's
career. Bud is working on the Admirals computer, making noise. Bud says that a
couple years ago MP's were sent to his home where his wife was found with a
bloody lip. He received counseling and neighbors said they heard his raised
voice recently. Tiner makes some noise and the Admiral asks what he is doing.
Tiner says he just finished installing a new screensaver so when he isn't using
his computer it will scan channels from a radio telescope that is looking for
messages from intelligent life in space. The Admiral asks what his wife said.
She said the last thing she remembers was having lunch. The blow to her head
made her loose the last couple hours before her attack. She says that her
husband isn't capable of any of this.
Krohn asks if Harm believes in God. Harm says they have more
important things to discus than his religion, like if he really gave his wife a
bloody lip back in 1995. Krohn says he loves his wife. He is speaking monotone
and seems cold. Harm asks what happened yesterday. Krohn says he got home at
5PM. His wife went to the store. She should have been back in 20 minutes. After
a while of waiting he got worried. So he went out looking for her, and he found
her. Harm says you found her in Baltimore, you like in Dumfries. So how did you
find her? He says he prayed, and his prayers were answered.
Rene comes out of the elevator just as Mac is walking by. Mac
asks what she's doing here and Rene says he came to give Harm these concert
tickets. Mac sees that they are Roaches concert tickets. Mac says she loves that
band and Rene says she can get extra tickets so she and Mic can come. Mac
realizes that she doesn't really want to go with Rene and makes up an excuse.
Rene says they can go out another time, like this weekend. Mac says it's a
date.
Krohn brings
up a chaplain he knew in Vietnam, the chaplain that was killed in the beginning
of the episode. Most chaplains just talked, but he actually went into combat
with him and his men. Krohn asks Harm if he ever heard of him and Harm says no.
Harm says what does this have to do with this case. Krohn says he'll get to
that. He says they went into a village and were fired upon. Some of the men were
injured and lying of the ground. They were pinned down and couldn't get to them,
but chaplain Wiggans ran to them. He was giving them their last rights and was
killed and then he gave Wiggans his last rights. After that it seemed that he
was watching over his group. He started a newsletter about him. That night when
his wife was missing, he prayed to Wiggans, and Wiggans answered his prayers. He
saw a vision of Wiggans right in front of him. He led him to his wife, just in
time to save her life.
Harm and Rene are in Harm's apartment reading the morning
newspaper. Someone knocks on the door and Rene answers it. It is a priest. He
asks for Harm. He says he just got in from Rome and thought he'd get right down
to business. He says he's Harry O'Rourke. Harm asks get down to what business?
Harry says the alleged miracle. Harm is confused. Harry says that Wiggans
already has one miracle to his name, a boy was cured of cancer. Now if Krohn
story of Wiggans leading him to his wife is verified, Wiggans will be declared a
saint.
Harry is in Harms office when Bud walks in. Bud is
prosecuting Krohn. Harm tells him that Harry is here to prove that Krohn saw
Wiggans so Wiggans can be declared a saint. But actually gets mad. He says that
Krohn is faking it. Harm calms him down and Bud leaves. Harm says Krohn has no
alibi, had no reason for being where he was, and has a past history of spousal
abuse. Harm asks how will he determine if there was a miracle. Harry says he'll
take to the police, Krohn, and follow the trial… Let Harm do the work. Harm
says he's not here to prove there was a miracle, he's here to prove Krohn didn't
try to kill his wife. Harry says that without anything to work with aren't those
two the same thing.
Tiner is in the Admiral office when the computer starts
picking up radio signals. Tiners jaw drops.
Mic starts telling Mac some plans for the weekend. Mac says
she already made plans. They are going out with Harm and Rene. Mic doesn't seem
to thrilled but he does it for Mac. He says ok and she leaves. Harm is walking
by and asks him how his job search is going. Mic says it's interesting, he'll
tell him more about it Friday. Harm says, Friday? Mic says on out double date,
after saying that he walks away and Harm has a confused look on his face.
The Admiral walks into his office to find some of his staff
looking at his computer. Tiner is telling him he was minding his own business
when the computer went crazy. The Admiral walks in and is mad and asks what's
going on. Tiner tells him that his computer is picking up signals from outer
space. The Admiral looks at his computer and calms down. Tiner says he's been
trying to reach the University of California all day to tell them what's
happening. The Admiral tells him to keep trying and tells the Gunny to get
everyone out of his office.
Bud and Harriet are in what would have been baby Sarah's
room. They are taking all the things they got for her to donate to the
children's hospital. Looking through all the things is too hard on Harriet. Bud
tells her to go and he'll finish up. He does this for a few moments before he
starts to cry.
Bud is questioning the detective. He says that they found
Krohn over his wife. Bud asks if he offered any explanation for finding his
wife? The detective says he says he thought she had been car jacked. Bud asks if
they found a carjacker. The detective says no. Bud says they did find a brick
with the wife's blood on it. Harm goes next and asked if they found any
fingerprints on the brick. He says no, Krohn was wearing gloves. Harm asks if he
was wearing gloves when he arrived in the ally. The detective says yes, it was
cold. Harm says then there is nothing suspicious about Krohn wearing gloves that
night. Harm says that didn't Krohn say that he thought his wife had been car
jacked. The detective says yes. Harm says isn't it true that someone has indeed
been car jacking women from parking lots around the Baltimore area, taking their
cars, and dumping the bodies. The detective says yes but those women were
stabbed to death. Harm asks if they have found Mrs. Krohn's car yet. The
detective says no, they're still looking for it. Harm asks if the police
officers didn't call an ambulance right away at the urging of Krohn, would she
still be alive. The detective says probably not. Harm asks if the officers would
have seen her if Krohn had not been kneeling over her in the headlights of his
own car. He says no. Harm says if Krohn wasn't there at that time and the patrol
car didn't pass by, would she be alive. He says no. Harm says it was pretty good
timing. The detective says, sometimes they get a break. Harm says, or someone
gives you one. Bud object but Harm withdraws the last statement. Bud redirects
and asks the detective if anyone has ever told you that he was led to the scene
of a crime by God. The detective says that once a man told him that Jesus helped
him kill his girlfriend because she was evil. Bud asks if that was the truth?
The Detective says Jesus wasn't the one they convicted.
Bud walks out of the courtroom telling Harm that this is a
bad defense. Bud asks Harry, who is walking next to Harm what the church thinks,
Bud is really mad. Harry says that someone can intercede to help a person when
they are in need. Bud says like when a person is drowning. Harry says yes. Bud
adds, or when a person is sick. Harry says yes. Bud finally says, and helping
little babies. Harm tries to calm him down. Bud sarcastically says all he and
Harriet had to do was pray to a dead soldier. Harm tells Harry that Bud lost
their child at birth. Harry says he is sorry. Bud says that Krohn wife is worth
saving… but their child wasn't? Harry says that nobody can explain these
things. Bud asks why is he here then?
Harm asks
Krohn, when did he start praying to Wiggans? Krohn says his friend had a bad
drinking problem. His friend prayed to Wiggans for the strength to help him
stop, and he did. After that he started praying to him. Harm asks if he saw
Wiggans die that night. He Krohn says yes, he got shot multiple times trying to
help men. Bud asks him how Wiggans lead him to his wife. Krohn says it's hard to
explain. He just appeared in front of him and he just followed Wiggans. Bud asks
him if he's heard in the news about a carjacker. He says yes, that’s why when
his wife didn't come home he got worried. Bud tells him that isn't it true that
that’s how he got the idea to say his wife was the victim of a carjacking?
Krohn says no. Bud says that he was worried when his wife didn’t come home
from the market. Krohn says yes. Bud says, then how come nobody at the market
says he was there. Krohn says he never got to the market. Wiggans lead him to
Baltimore. Bud says that isn't it true that he tried to kill his wife. Wiggans
says he arrived just in time to save his wife.
Harry is telling Harm on the stand that miracles happen and
the church recognizes them. Harm asks if any miracles have been attributed to
Wiggans. Harry says yes. A man that served with Wiggans had a daughter who had a
tumor. He prayed to Wiggans all night and in the morning the tumor has
disappeared.
Harm, Rene, Mac, and Mic are at the concert. Harm and Mac are
talking about their past cases and Mic feels left out. Mic asks Harm about his
case and Harm says it's easy, all he has to do is prove there is a God. Mac and
Harm again start to talk about stuff only they know. Mic leans in and whispers
something to Mac and she laughs. Harm looks at her laugh and Rene looks at Harm
with a worried look.
The next day Harm and Harry walk into headquarters when Gunny
introduces them to a Marine that served with Wiggans, Hammel. Hammel asks Harry
if he's the one that’s trying to make Wiggans a saint. Harry says yes. Hammel
says that the church is barking up the wrong tree on this one.
Bud questions Harry. Bud is asking him question, which will
lead him to a point. On of Bud's last questions is if he thinks Wiggans should
be a saint. Harry says no. Bud is shocked. Harry says he as heard some new
information that puts Wiggans cause in doubt. Harry says that he might have not
tried to save the wounded men, but really use them for cover.
Harm is in his office with Krohn. Harm says if there is any
other way he wants to go… Krohn says he did not try to kill his wife. Krohn
asks where Harry heard this. Harm says Randy Hammel. Harm asks if he was there,
if he was in a good position to watch. Krohn says better than anyone. He was
with them for a month and he was being transferred out because he was a coward.
Harm says maybe they can use that but Krohn says not that day. That day he saved
their lives.
Bud asks Hammel if he has anything against Krohn or Wiggans.
Hammel says no. Bud asks why he decided to come forward now. Hammel says there
is no way Wiggans can be a saint, not with what he did that night. Bud asks him
if he's sure of what he saw that night. Hammel says yes. After they were
attacked he jumped into an empty hooch with Wiggans. The VC never saw them. Bud
says there was no reason for them to leave the hooch. Hammel says no. The VC
were right behind them. He could even hear them taking to each other. Wiggans
just got scared and ran away. Bud asks him what he did then. Hammel says one of
the men that was killed was carrying a M79. Hammel ran out, took the M79 and
fired a couple grenades towards where he heard the VC. Bud say he cleared the
way for escape and was awarded the Silver Star. Harm questions Hammel next. Harm
says that from what he said, Wiggans ran out of a safe place, into a firefight.
Harm asks if that is the action of a coward. Hammel says he probably thought it
was only a matter of time before the VC found them and killed them. Harm says he
stayed. Hammel says for a while. He took off his pack and took out his
ammunition. Harm says, you took off your pack? Hammel says he didn't need to be
weighed down by food and a tent. Harm says that he said that Wiggans took his
pack off, but Krohn says that Wiggans had his pack on. Hammel says that’s not
what he saw. Harm says that Hammel was in a good position to help his team that
night. Hammel says yes. Harm says he was in a safe place, he heard the enemy, he
was by a M79. But he stayed. Hammel says for a while. Harm says isn't it true
that he was considered a coward up until that night. He says yes. Harm says that
when his friends were being killed he stayed where he was. Hammel says the M79
was in the open. It was a miracle he wasn't killed. Harm says that he saw the
Chaplain flee out of fear in a time when he was scared. Hammel says yes. But
after he saw him run he got discussed and did what he did. Harm says he saw what
the Chaplain did. He saw his cowardliness acted out in the Chaplain and that
motivated him to overcome it. Bud objects but Harm says he's only suggesting
that he didn't really see the Chaplain, he saw himself.
The Admiral is in his office doing work in his office. Tiner
comes in and says the emissions on his computer are the normal signals coming
from the Brinyon Pratt Pulsar. The Admiral asks how long ago did the signals
leave. Tiner says 5 million years ago. Tiner leaves and the Admiral leans back
in his chair, smiles, and watches the computer screen.
Bud and Harm give their closing arguments. The jury comes
back and they find Krohn guilty. Harm says he's sorry. Krohn says he doesn't
understand what happened, he told the truth. Harm says it must have been a lot
for them to understand. Wiggans comes over to them and tells them that he will
continue investigating and hopes that Wiggans does become a saint. Harm says
there is still the sentencing process. Krohn says someone help save his wife,
now someone will have to save him, it will happen. Harm says it won't even take
a miracle. Krohn says no, but if it does… Krohn is escorted out and Harm asks
if Wiggans will become a saint. Harry says to call him in a hundred years,
because that’s how long it usually takes.
