This thin, vertical cloud signals much instability in the atmosphere. On certain spring days in Oklahoma, such clouds will sprout over a large expanse of sky. Early towers will get pulled apart by strong upper winds and often will struggle to break through a capping inversion in the atmosphere -- warmer air overlying colder air -- that suppresses storm growth.
