Nadia
(The Secret of Blue Water)

Fushigi no Umi no Nadia
Nadia Portrait

Story

Nadia is based loosely on the works of Jules Verne, or rather more accurately takes place in a Vern-esque world. It is the world of the acrobat Nadia, her pet lion cub King, and the young genius inventer Jean. When Jean rescues Nadia during a flying-machine contest at the world's fair, the two embark on a fast-paced adventure together.
This adventure revolves around the mysterious blue gem Nadia wears as a pendant, the Blue Water, which is sought by the evil villain Gargoyle who needs it to finish the power source of his ultimate weapon, the Tower of Babel. This device will let his Neo-Atlantean empire take over the world and restore the Atlantean legacy long lost to time. However, Gargoyle has an enemy who proves to be the guardian of Jean and Nadia. This is Captain Nemo and his ship, the Nautilus. Last ruler of the old Atlantean kingdom, Nemo is determined to stop Gargoyle from using his horrible weapon to take the world by force.
Nadia proves to be a family-oriented adventure that may be a bit too intense for young children (there is honest and frank discussion of death for example) but is nevertheless one of the best anime for ages 8-14 who are interested in the genre.
