Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind

NausicaaBased on the epic manga by Hayao Miyazaki, this feature-length movie takes a few liberties with the story for the sake of simplification. Yet, much of the grandeur of the manga remains intact in the film. The story takes place on a distant world where, thousands of years after the Seven Days of Fire (a huge pan-global war involving the powerful God Soldiers), much of that world is being engulfed by a toxic and poisonous fog, the Miasma. Nausicaa, the daughter of the venerable king of the Valley of Wind, is caught up in the politics of power when an Imperial cargo ship carrying an ancient, inactivated God Soldier crashes in the valley. Faced with Imperial forces seizing her small village, Nausicaa must put her own comfort aside to save her people and protect that which she holds dear -- which includes the animals and plants of the Miasma. This is an excellent film, and has remained very popular in Japan as well as world-wide since it's debut many years ago. Recent dealings between Miyazaki and Buena Vista Distributing (Disney) may result in re-issue of the film (hopefully in it's complete and intact form, not the horribly-edited "Warriors of the Wind" version that was once available in the US).
Genre: Fantasy
Format: Unedited "intact" version not available commercially in the US. Original manga has been translated into English and is published by Viz Communications.
Rating -- 92 -- Contains brief scenes of violence.
