Amsterdam offers shows in English, plays, puppet theatre, cabaret, and musicals.
The Stadsschouwburg is the oldest, and perhaps most well-known theatre
with serious and not-so-serious theatre productions. Sometimes they
also have ballet and music productions.
The Theatre Carre` is where circus shows and large musical productions
are held.
Smaller, more intimate theatres are: Kleine Komedie and Nieuwe de la Mar.
The National Ballet is the largest ballet company in the Netherlands. Established in 1961 by Sonia Gaskell, it now has over 80 dancers from various countries.
They perform works of George Balanchine(est. New York City Ballet),
Rudi van Dantzig, and Hans van Manen. Classics suchs as Romeo and
Juliet, Swan Lake, and Cinderella, are performed as well.
Although Amsterdam is not as well-known for its music, a wide array of music can be found sure to please almost every music fan.
The Concertgebouw, home to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, is
famous for its incredible acoustics.
The Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra's home is in the Beurs van
Berlage.
Both the Paradiso and Melkweg house "pop" music.
IJsbreker has experimental music.
Jazz can be found in the BIM-huis, as well as numerous cafes.
The Netherlands Opera, along with the National Ballet, perform in the Muziektheater.
