The Schafer Boys

Valentin, Henry, William, Conrad and Leonard

These guys are second generation. They are the sons of Conrad and the grandsons of Valentin and Catharina Elise. This Conrad is my great Grandfather.

  • On May 25th, 1851, Valentin Schafer and his wife, Catharina Elise and their three children landed in New Orleans on the ship Diana. They came from a German port in Bremen and probably lived somewhere in Hesse. Valentin was born in Niederaula so they may have lived there.
  • The children were Elisabeth, Conrad and his twin(?) sister Christina.
  • I have been able to find Valentin, Catharina and Conrad in Washington Township in Tazewell County, Illinois. This is from the 1860 US census.
  • After that the lineage is fairly easy to find. But, I can't find out what happened to the two girls. I have to assume they married but I can't seem to find a trace.

If you have any ideas how I can track down the lost sisters I would greatly appreciate it. Better yet, if you're distantly related and have some information please send me an E-mail. Thanks!

Here's me and Brendon in 1994 standing by the gravesone of Valintin Schafer. That's my ggg-grandfather and Brendon's gggg-grandfather. He and Katharina are buried in the Zion Lutheran cemetary in Washington Township in Tazewell County, Illinois. Valentin was born on September 25th, 1801 and died March 14th, 1884. Catharina Elise was born April 12th, 1800 and died August 2nd, 1884.

The link below is a list of everyone buried in the Zion Lutheran Cemetary in Washington Township Illinois. It was copied by Phyllis and Earl Kramer in March 1981. The maiden name for Barbara Schafer, my gg-grandmother, was Oertle. There is an Oertle family buried in Zion along with her. I'm sure they're related but I haven't found the connection yet. If you have one, or a connection for anyone else on the list, please let me know. There's an infant grave, believed to be WEBELHUTH, but there's no engraving on the stone. It has a lamb statue. There's also a couple of babies all alone. If nothing else I want to remember them, also.
