Candle/Universal/Omegas Transistors
This page will show my Candle and related transistor sets. These early 60's Japanese radios were inexpensive imports. They came in a variety of styles and colors, and the same sets were often produced under several brand names, including Candle, Universal, Omegas, O.M.G.S, and possibly others. Enjoy.
This is the new prize of my Candle collection. This STR-80 is a larger 8 transistor 2 band radio in the shape of a 8 mm movie camera. Really well built, this heavy radio has many features of high end sets, including set-screws in the knobs, a thick felt washer behind the tuning knob, a steel "chassis" that holds the circuit board, vernier tuning, AM and SW bands, and more. Neat radio.
This unusual Candle has 8 transistors and a unique shape. Great color, too. Don't know the model number.
These shirt pocket Candle radios are nice examples of the early 60's Japanese Candles. On the left is a PTR-67. It has a nice deep green reverse painted area above the "V". The other in baby blue has a white reverse painted area. I don't know the model number of this tiny set.
This Candle 2 transistor Boys' Radio is typical of the Boys' radios of the early 60's. This example in bold black with gold trim originally included a screw-in antenna. The contrasting red knobs and cloisone shield dress it up nicely.
This ivory Candle PTR85C Radio eight transistor radio has a beautiful reverse painted gold front and a gold mesh grille.
These O.M.G.S and Universal radios are two more examples of what are basically the same set under different names. The Universal (left) is an 8 transistor set, the O.M.G.S. is a 10 transistor copy.
This Horizontal Candle radio looks great in Salmon pink with its' round grille and black accents. The small Candle logo badge on the front is nice too.
These Candle models PTR62 and PTR93 are two more examples of Candle transistors. The Salmon PTR62 is like many of the others, but the PTR93 is quite unique and rare. It is a 9 transistor unit that includes a small lamp next to the dial. The lamp lights when the tuning is OFF stations and goes out when the tuning is centered ON a station.
These Horizontal Candle 10 transistors are a colorful matched pair of gold-grilled radios.
These shirt pocket Universal radios are yet two more examples of the same basic set. The Black (left) is an 8 transistor set, the Green is a 6.
More Candle/Universal/Omegas sets coming. Check back later for more pictures.
