Gary: I don’t see the ball over here (forehand side) as well as I do right in front of me (backhand side).

Gao: No, I don’t think you need to see the ball. You just watch the ball comes, comes… (shows direction of ball, then hits the ball) okay. Don’t be late. You don’t need to see where is ball.

Gary: Uh huh. You need to see where it bounces.

Gao: Yes, you just need to move. You see the ball comes to there (steps over there and hits the ball). You don’t need to watch the ball (shows the ball traveling with her eyes fixed on it) and then hit (hits ball). No.

Gao: Backhand the same ball is easy. Because your body (twists body at waist) don’t need to turn. But forehand you need to turn your body. You always watch the ball. Go to the ball (swings paddle). Always when you play forehand. Watch it (shows direction of the ball)

(Gary and Gao hit a couple and then stop)

Gao: I’m not watch the ball. The ball comes to me. I just see where is the ball (demonstrates travel of the ball). Go there (steps). Move to there (swings racket). Go there (steps). Move to there (swings). Okay.

(Gary and Gao hit a couple more then stop)

Gao: I just have a feeling. I have a feeling the ball will come to here. So I move here. Okay.
