CONFERENCE ASSIGNS OUR PASTOR:
Our pastor, the Reverend Steve Rasmussen assumed his duties at Union Chapel in 7/1/02. His thoughts follow:
We are United Methodists, and we are itinerent as pastors. So, we move to new places and churches, and I am very happy to have been appointed by the Bishop to serve Union Chapel.
My name is Stephen Rasmussen. I go by Steve, Rev. Steve, Rev. Rasmussen, (pronounced RAS muh son a little bit more difficult), and Dad. My wife of nearly 32 years is Becky. She has worked in banking her whole adult life, and is an office manager of operations for Fifth Third Bank at 71st and Keystone. Our daughter, Jaime, graduated B.S. from Auburn University in Alabama and M.S. from graduate work at Indiana State University. She is a collegiate coach.
There are more than a few clergy in the family tree. My father Lyle, Tim my older brother, and my younger brother Dan are all United Methodist pastors in Indiana.
I was ordained an Elder in the South Indiana Conference in 1980. Since then, I have served in five churches. The longest appointment was at Whiteland U.M.C. from 1989 to 1998. I have most recently served at Brazil First U.M.C. from 1998 to present. For me, ministry is not just a vocation, it is a calling, a calling which I received the summer of 1969 at a church camp at Epworth Forest in Northern Indiana.
Becky and I are excited to be here, and are looking forward to getting to know you, and you getting to know us. The ministry of Gods Church will continue, and together we will serve His Church, at UnionChapel.
In Christ, Steve

We are pleased that you are considering Union Chapel as the site for your wedding. We at Union Chapel will do all within our power to make sure that if you select our church, it will be a very special day. Our philosophy concerning hosting a wedding at our church is that we will work with you to design your special day within a Christian context. We will suggest a wedding service while giving you the freedom to change, delete, add to, or even propose an alternate service. We will allow you to select the music you wish to use at your service with the final approval of the music director or the pastor. We will allow you to decorate the sanctuary as you so desire. It is our policy to host only one wedding per weekend, with very few exceptions, which gives you the freedom to set the time for the rehearsal, when to arrive at the church to dress, when to take pictures and to set the time for your wedding that best fits into your schedule.
Union Chapel is conveniently located just one block west of Keystone Avenue on 86th street, (just two blocks west of the Keystone-at-the-Crossing Mall.) We are less than one mile from the Keystone Exit, (Exit 33) off I-465 on the northeast side of Indianapolis. We are therefore easily accessible to your out-of-town guests as well as making it easy to get to a reception site from our church.
Our church was built in the early 1950's in the New England style. We have 14 pews on either side of the center aisle, with each pew comfortably seating six to eight adults, giving us a seating capacity on the main floor of approximately 225. There is also a balcony that will seat an additional 50 people, giving us a total seating capacity in our sanctuary of 275. There are dressing rooms located in the back of our church for your use. The church is fully air conditioned and heated to make sure that the building is comfortable for your special day.
Union Chapel's facilities are available to members, constituent members, and those seeking to establish a relationship with a church in this area. It is not the policy of our church to conduct services for couples who are attending or belong to other churches in the area. Our facilities are also not available to be rented for someone other than the minister of our church to conduct the service. Other ministers are invited to take part in the wedding service, at the discretion of the Union Chapel pastor, but the pastor of our church is in charge of any and all services conducted in our building.
A wedding is not officially booked on our church calendar until both you and your fiancée have met with the pastor and have filled out the necessary information. We encourage you to book your wedding as soon as possible as it is not uncommon for us to book weddings up to a year in advance.
We hope this information is helpful in your decision on selecting a church to host your wedding. If you have any further questions, if you would like a more detailed printed wedding brochure or a price list, please contact us at:

The earliest record of formal Christian worship in the Nora area is found in the Minutes Book for the Allisonville Circuit of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of 1827, which met in the Purcel Log School Building, located near 86th Street and Manderly Drive.
A church building was erected in 1864 on the site of the 1822 Whitinger Burial Ground on a bluff overlooking the White River. The Whitinger deed had restrictions requiring that all denominations could use the building, thus the name Union Chapel. It was used by Quaker, Lutheran, and Christian denominations, but the predominant services were held by Methodist Episcopal ministers.
When the area became suburban in the late 1940's and early 1950's, it became apparent that the early building was inadequate and so the congregation purchased a five acre tract at the northwest corner of East 86th Street and Haverstick Road. The new building was consecrated in 1954. By 1958 an education wing was added. Union Chapel United Methodist Curch continues to serve the Nora community is the same spirit of worship and service as has been its practice since 1827.
