In 1906, cartoonist Homer Davenport traveled to the Bedouin horse-breeding tribes of Arabia Deserta, and returned to the U.S. with 27 Arabian horses. This was the largest single importation of Arabians of its time, and these animals formed a significant base of modern American Arabian horse pedigrees. Horses bred entirely from these original imports, with no introductiion of outside blood, have come to be known as "Davenport" Arabians.
