HARMAN BILL TO HONOR POW/MIAs
PASSES FIRST HURDLE
Washington, D.C.-- Representative Jane Harman (D-Torrance) today announced that her bill HR 1161--to require the flying of the POW/MIA flag at federal facilities including U.S. Post Offices-- has been adopted by the House National Security Committee's military personnel subcommittee in mark-up. This is the first hurdle in getting the bi-partisan bill out of committee to a full vote.
"I am very pleased that my colleagues agree with me that this legislation is the right thing to do," stated Harman. "The POW/MIA flag is symbolic of the men and women in our armed forces who were left behind as prisoners of war or unaccounted for as missing in action at the end of the war. More than 88,000 men and women are listed as MIAs from World War II, Korea and Vietnam."
Harman introduced the bill when local postal officials in her 36th congressional district enforced U.S. Postal regulations and refused to let veterans fly the distinctive black and gray flag. Current postal regulations prohibit the flying of any flags, other than the flag of the United States.
The bill now goes to the full House National Security Committee. A companion bill has been introduced in the Senate by Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell.
