HARMAN BILL CLEARS MAJOR HURDLE TOWARD ENACTMENT

WASHINGTON -- Legislation introduced by Rep. Jane Harman (D-Torrance) requiring the flying of the POW/MIA flag at federal facilities, including U.S. Post Offices, cleared another major hurdle Wednesday night when the House National Security Committee reported it favorably to the House. "I am very pleased that my colleagues agree that flying the POW/MIA flag is the right thing to do," said Harman, a member of the Committee. "The POW/MIA flag is a symbol of our nation's concern and commitment to achieving the fullest possible accounting of Americans who, having been prisoners of war or missing in action, remain unaccounted for. More than 88,000 service men and women are listed as missing from World War II, Korea and Vietnam."

Harman introduced the POW/MIA flag bill earlier this spring after local postal officials in Lomita refused a request from veterans to fly the distinctive black and white flag. Current postal regulations prohibit the flying of any flags, other than the flag of the United States. The bill which includes Harman's POW/MIA flag provision now goes to the full House for consideration. A companion flag bill has been introduced in the Senate by Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-CO).
