WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives today passed legislation which includes a provision authored by Rep. Jane Harman (D-Torrance) requiring the flying of the POW/MIA flag on patriotic holidays at federal facilities, including U.S. Post Offices.
"I am very pleased that the full House is now on record in support of flying the POW/MIA flag," said Harman, who added the POW/MIA flag provision to the National Defense Authorization Act, which passed by a vote of 304 to 120. "The POW/MIA flag is a symbol of our nation's concern and commitment to achieving the fullest possible accounting of Americans who, having been prisoners of war or missing in action, remain unaccounted for. More than 88,000 service men and women are listed as missing from World War II, Korea and Vietnam."
Congresswoman Harman originally introduced the POW/MIA flag bill in March after local postal officials in Lomita refused a request from veterans to fly the distinctive black and white flag. Current postal regulations prohibit the flying of any flags, other than the flag of the United States. Harman attributed much of the nationwide publicity her flag bill has received to David Albert, a Lomita city councilman. Albert brought to Harman's attention the Post Office's rebuff to the veterans' request.
"I thank Congresswoman Harman for her personal commitment of time and energy," said Albert. "It's a great day to be an American."
The national defense bill, with the Harman POW/MIA flag provision, now goes to the Senate, where a similar flag requirement is expected to be considered in early July.
