Three important positions are accountable to the Chief of Security (CSeO). First, the Tactical
Officer on the Bridge is assigned from the Security Department. Next, the Assistant Chief of
Security (ACSeO) and the Intelligence Officer.
The Tactical Officer (TACO) is an integral member of the bridge watch team. The TACO monitors all ship's security and defensive systems. The security board is duplicated at the duty security watch officer station, and in my office in the security complex. Under battle conditions, the TACO's functions can be transferred to the battle bridge, or auxiliary control.
The ACSeO is my right hand man who keeps the daily routine going. The ACSeO actually makes all the duty assignments for various watches, patrols, and off ship functions. The duty watch officer reports to the ACSeO and controls the on-watch section. Security stands the normal 8 hour (3 section) watch rotation. The USS Maat is a large ship to patrol and keep secure.
In addition to all the security officers roaming the ship, there are three small sections. The training section tracks all weapon qualifications and maintains the phaser range. They will schedule you for time on the phaser range as needed. All security officers must maintain a higher qualification standard, every quarter, than the average crew member. Personnel assigned to the standard away teams must qualify annually at Starfleet minimum standards. All others qualify as needed for their specialty. The Training section is lead by the Weapons Training Officer. His section contains 3 weapons instructors and a couple of yeomen.
Speaking of weapons, the next section is the Armory. The Armory Officer is responsible for all
hand weapons and any security equipment. He must inventory all ship's weapons quarterly as well
as any confiscated weapons from captured personnel. The armory also contains any personal
weapons you may have brought onboard. The armory maintains a selection of repair parts for
maintenance purposes. Our weapons count is large. A Phaser-I is available for all assigned
Starfleet personnel. Phaser-II at 150% of the security department personnel count and Phaser
Rifles at 150% of the Marine contingent onboard plus security, plus various assorted items such
as sonic grenades and such. Not all these weapons are located in the armory in the security
complex. A mini- armory is located near the main shuttle bay. Each transporter room and shuttle
craft contains a locker of 6 Phaser-IIs for emergency purposes. Each watch section has an
armorer, two maintenance techs, and a supply tech.
The last major area under my ACSeO is the dreaded Brig. The Brig Officer is responsible for the
brig area, its maintenance, and any incarcerated personnel. The brig, a restricted access area, is
located within the security complex on Deck 17, which is a limited access area. During off duty
hours, the duty watch officer is the Acting Brig Officer. If the brig is occupied, security personnel
are detailed as brig guards. A small holding cell is located near the main shuttle bay. It is used
when large number of prisoners must be transported on/off the ship via shuttle craft.
The counter balancing arm of security is Intelligence. The Intelligence Officer (IntellO) has a split
area. The Intelligence section deals with terrorism, counter-terrorism, and other spy type
activities of information gathering. The Cryptography section is the other half. They deal with all
information, equipment, or items classified by the Federation/Starfleet as Confidential or above.
The transmission, movement, and storage of such material is their responsibility. Some items are
restricted to only the Intelligence Officer and CO. The Intelligence Officer also maintains the
Secure Conference Room (SCR) within the security complex. Within the SCR are the only
terminals which will access material classified above secret. This information is stored in a
specially protected sub-processor in the secure area. The unit is monitored by special classified
sensors for forced entry or tampering. The CO or IntellO can destroy this special subprocessor
with a special access code sequence. When given, it releases an amount of antimatter into the
unit.
The Special Forces (Operations) Commander has a liaison function with the Chief of Security. This is due to the fact they usually are dependent on us for transportation and support. Spec Ops units usually act as independent entities. Sometimes they must borrow weapons, personnel, and working spaces within the security complex.
I've spoken of the Security Complex in several sections above, but what exactly is the Security Complex? Basically, it is the nerve center for the Security Department. It contains the administrative offices, records, and section head offices, as well as mine. The ship's main armory, brig, phaser range, and weapon repair are located within this secure environment. The Security Watch Commander (aka Duty Watch Officer) controls all patrols and guard stations from his area in the complex. He has full ship's sensors to assist his patrolmen and guards. There is also a large area with workstations to file reports and investigations, do research with Starfleet HQ, and other administrative tasks.
There is also a much more secure area within the complex run by the IntellO. The most important of these spaces is the Secure Conference Room (SCR) which holds some very important meetings. Very few individuals are permitted access under any circumstance. There are a few items within this area that only the Commanding Officer can access. If we have Special Forces attached, they will operate out of assigned spaces within this most secure of environments.
We have made one major modification to the original plans. We added a small gym to the complex. This way personnel can work out on slow days and still be available for immediate action as necessary. We sacrificed the lounge area, but who needed any more coffee and donuts?
Second, we enforce the no weapons policy. Many of the sites we visit or meet at do not permit real or simulated (toy) weapons. A weapon is any instrument that can be used to cut, maim, injure, or do bodily damage to another or to property. These include plastic play phasers, guns, and knives. This is a legal necessity in the present society in which we live.
During any fund raiser, we maintain a watchful eye on the cash box. This ensures the money collected for our charities or ourselves is not stolen. I know of no stolen items since I've been onboard, which has been over seven years.

ATTENTION MAATI WRITERS - I would appreciate be updated on all current characters being written for as members of the Security Department. I'd like a short update on each, too, since I've been bad and haven't really kept up on the fiction for a while. The characters currently listed in the department in the Personnel File are: LTsg Tad, LT Ette Char, LT Gathos*, LTjg Katrina, LTjg Selena, ENS Lotus Blossom, ENS Nene Crostairs, CDT LT Marion Tal'Ok Ral, CDT LT Martin Riggs, and CDT LT Calon Shumain. (If any of these have transferred, resigned, or phasered into cosmic dust, I'd also appreciate the update!) Please send me the following for each of your characters if the he/she/it doesn't have a current Personnel File:
Name:
Rank: (If the rank is different than in the PF, please let me know.)
Position in the Security Department:
Race:
Other: (Whatever pertinent info you feel I should know)
Character Creator and or Primary Writer:
That's pretty much all I'm interested in for the time being. I really don't need the whole Personnel File summary on each character. We'll save that for the Personnel File update.
