The following is a brief history of how Galveston became a city:
The Karankawa Indians are considered to be the first to live here, although they may have only used the island as a burial ground, hunting and fishing. the Spanish explorers Juan de Grijalva and Alonso Alvarez de Pineda passed by in 1519 and 1520,but didn't stop.
The first recorded landing was in the fall of 1528.Some spanish explorers looking to start a colony in the Gulf headed by Panfilo de Narvaez Landed in Tampa Bay,Florida and split up.Some stayed w/ the ship and eventualy went back to Spain, the stranded ones on shore thought they had missed their rendezvous and built some boats. They took off looking for the Spanish ports on the coast of Mexico ..a storm washed 2 of the boats ashore on an Island(believed to be Galveston Island). The first recorded European to step ashore was Alvar Nunez, aka Cabeza de Vaca,w/ about 80 others. He was supposed to have been the highest ranking, haveing been the treasurer of the Narvaez expedition. He survived to later write an account of what happened. Most died durring the 1582 winter. One of the 3 survivors was a Moor, called Estevanico, who is believed to have been the first black to land here. They finaly made it to Mexico 8 years later.Nunez named the island 'Malhado' because of the bad misfortune he had here.
The maps of the period called it 'Isla de Culebras' (Island of the Snakes) ..because of all the snakes (mostly rattle snakes). I haven't seen one in years.
The French explorer 'Robert LaSalle' named San Luis after Louis XIV.  The island was finaly known as Galveston when the spanish surveyors named the largest bay after Bernardo de Galvez, who had commisioned the survey. Galvez aided the American colonists during the revolution againt the British(he was gov. of Louisiana at the time). He sent Lots of cows, and supplies, even fighting the British on the gulf coast. His assitance was a deciding factor in the defeat of the British.
1816-the first 'pirate' started a base here. Louis-Michel Aury(French). He was associated w/ a group who was trying to take Mexico away from Spain, commanded by Francisco Xavier Mina. He had left Spain after a failed attempt to overthrow Ferdinand VII.He brought his fleet here(8 ships) and was soon joined by Colonel Henry Perry(American). Mina,captured-executed in Mexico Ciy-Nov.11,1873.Perry,killed himself to avoid capture June 19,1873 (Remember Goliad?)  Well...Aury had left a few men here and went off with Mina/Perry..but when he came back, Jean and Pierre Lafitte had moved in. Aury stayed a few weeks, then went to make a new camp off the coast of Nicaragua. The Lafitte Bros. called this place Campeche, sometimes spelled Campeachy. The name 'Galvezton' was prob. a settlement somewhere else on the bay at that time.Jean Lafitte started calling the island Galvezton(1817-1818),and eventualy became Galveston.  A few words about the Lafittes, since every time i plant a tree in my yard,i dig up a wine bottle or something(they had a Big party before they left, even burnning their settlement). They were born in Haiti, went to Louisiana by 1804. Had a smuggling base in Barataria by 1808.They were 'privateers',different than pirates.Privateers were licensed by a goverment to prey on ships of certain nationality. The British tried to get them to join in an invasion on New Orleans, they reported this to the U.S. gov. there. They helped Andrew Jackson defend New Oerleans against the Brits. Governor W.C.C.Claiborne ran them out of Barataria in 1814.They asked the US gov to return their property in Bar. for their help in the N.O. fight. Pres.James Madison said that they really didn't owe them that much,so they came here to Galveston. One of his big 'money makeing' ideas was smuggling slaves into Louisiana, with the help of James Bowie. The Lafitte's were asked by an out-of-work general by the name of Charles Lallemand, one of Napoleon's generals. Napoleon was in exile then. It is believed that he had plans to take Mexico, and then try to get France back. General Lallemand set up 'Camp d'Aisle' on the Trinity river,by where Liberty is now. The Spanish heard abt. it and sent some troops to 'ask them to leave'. They left before the Spanish got there.Napoleon could have ended up as King of Mexico.
In abt 1821 James Long ,a former U.S.Army surgeon set up a camp on Bolivar Point, called Fort Las Casas. He ran a vol. army funded by some people in Missisippi wanting to take Texas from Spain. He was captured at Goliad, shot in a prison in Mexico city(they claimed it was an accident-they still use that one). His wife went back to Miss.,but returned w/ Stephen F. Austin as a colonist in 1824.  A U.S.Navy warship sailed into Galveston Bay and asked the Lafittes to leave Galveston after some of their ship captains stopped a U.S. ship. This is where the Treasure stories start. They had only a little time to get their stuff togeather,so some people think they buried it at their house site(Lafitte's Grove or Three Trees), It was said they had a fight w/ some Karankawa indians there once. Clear Creek is another possible location. They left Galveston and went to the southern Gulf of Mexico. His journal is in the Sam Houston Regional Libray.  The Mexicans finaly broke away from Spanish rule. Col.Austin asked them if he could make Galveston part of his colony.(his ship the 'Lively' sank at San Luis pass on the way to the Brazos colony.) They made Galveston a provisional Port w/ a customs house.  Michael B.Menard ended up w/ some of the island after buying the rights to it from a Mexican citizen,Juan Seguin,in 1834. The Texas colonists had a meeting in San Felipeand decided to make Texas a seperate state,Henry Smith was govenor. They bought 4 ships and started the Texas Navy, based on Fort Point, about where the Coast Guard is based now.
the 'Liberty'-seized in a New Orleans shipyard for bills.
the 'Independance'-captured by Mexicans off Velasco.
the 'Invincible'-broke up after running aground after a fight w/ 2 Mex. warships off Galveston.
the 'Brutus'-sank in a storm,1837.
The Republic of Texas built a fort at the east end,w/ guns from the sidewheel steamer 'Cayuga' after the hurricane of 1837.
Menard bought a 'quit-claim' deed from the Texas gov. for $50,000(borrowed) and joined w/ Thomas McKinney,Samuel Williams and Gail Borden, forming the 'Galveston City Company',selling shares for $1,000 each.
Commodore Charles Morgan started the first regular costal ship service from Galveston to New Orleans w/ the steamboat 'Columbia',it was docked abt where pier 21 is now.It was the start of the 'Morgan Line'.
The Galveston City Company started selling lots in 1838,selling abt 700 the first year for abt $400 each.

I suggest that more attention is focused on the areas that cause the largest enviromental changes.when you see a barge going down the ship channel, and there is a 'slick' of chemicals on the water comming from it, and the smell takes away your breath,(some barges 'wash out' their tanks when in the bay)don't worry,it isn't hurting anything.tolulene realy doesn't cause cancer(sure)and the fish like it.if anyone remembers the freeze of the bay abt 10 yrs ago, they would know that you can kill off more than 1/2 of the bays fish population in one week, and it will come back. but if you change the enviroment thru chemicals and bay current flow changes,it will not be able to recover. A recent studie strongly suggests that more shrimp and fingerling fish are killed by the larger fish(specked trout, redfish, etc) than all the boats catches . Reducing the incidental kill from commercial fishing is very important.but everything that affects the bay should be 'on the list' of contributing factors, and attention should be given to the largest offender first, not the easiest. the 'save the turtles, but not the childen' attitude is absurd.yes, turtles are important.but overpopulation, hunger, education to prevent poverty is where tax dollars should be going at this time. if you teach people to feed themselves in certain countries, they will stop killing the turtles for money.if you only earn 20$ amonth, and your family is hungry, and you see a turtle on the bach by your house, you will kill it,eat it,and sell the rest.this will never stop until there is an alternative way for people to survive.by the way, turtles are a delecacy in most countries(esp. france). The people that put the dead turtles on the beach and said that they were caught in shrimping nets forgot to notice that the shrimping season hadn't started yet.(high island incident) I would suggest that next time they try using turtles that hadn't been in the freezer for so long, and had had partial necropsies done on them. enviroment, ecology and fishing in the Galveston bay area of Texas and the island.island marinas, fishing piers, boating,Sailing.
