Route

Route Notes
This is Utah's newest route, created as a replacement to US 666 in the summer of 2003. See the US 666 section just below for more information.
In choosing a new number, federal officials chose US 491, deciding that this route could be viewed as branch of US 191. However, that choice is in itself, because US 191, as a three-digit route itself, is supposed to be a branch of US 91. This author knows of no other location in the country where a three-digit route has a spur.
When Arizona removed US 666 from that state's route system in the early 1990s, officials there said that one of the most important factors in the their decision to change the route's number was that US 666 shields were among the most stolen signs from ADOT's inventory. On Utah's existing section of the route, reassurance guide signs appeared very sparingly, probably owing to the same phenonmenon.

Route History
As one of the first paved roads in southeastern Utah, this route actually has a long history. Prior to World War II, the pavement now signed as US 491, as well as route 191 north to Crescent Junction, was numbered US 550. Later, that entire section was numbered US 160. Later, when US 191 was created, the portion left dangling east of Monticello was assigned as US 666.

     Legislated Route
§72-4-137. (11) SR-666. From Route 191 at Monticello east to the Utah-Colorado state line.

Route
This route was removed form the state highway system in Summer 2003, and replaced by US 491.

Route Notes
For nearly 30 years, from the mid-1970s until in ignimonious demise in the summertime of 2003, this route with a number from out of the book of Revelation, existed in the southeastern corner of Utah.

Actually the road got its number as a spur route from US 66, and when it was first created it ran from southern Arizona to Monticello, Utah. By the early 1990s, Arizona's Department of Transportation had tired of replacing route shields stolen from along the highway, and sought a new number for the road. The case was made easier because US 66, the route upon whose existence the numbering for 666 was based, had been deleted fifteen years earlier, in the late 1970s. Arizona chose US 191 as the new name for the state's portion of Route 666, between I-10 and I-40.

But the route remained untouched in the other three states through which it passed, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah, until New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson latched on to the issue in late 2002. It would be cynical to suggest that his interest in changing the road's number was somehow connected to pandering to tribal votes in northwest New Mexico, and this author tries to keep politics out of these pages as much as possible. Sometimes, the issues of roads cross into the sphere of politics and this webmaster is forced to walk a delicate line.

In any case, by the summer of 2003, Gov. Richardson had convinced the necessary authorities in the various agencies and neighboring states, and US 666 disappeared from the map, becoming US 491.

Route History
As one of the first paved roads in southeastern Utah, this route actually had a long history. Prior to World War II, the pavement used by US 666, as well as route 191 north to Crescent Junction, was numbered US 550. Later, that entire section was numbered US 160.
