| The interchange was revamped as a part of the run-up to the 2002 Olympics. What had previously been a fairly low-volume diamond, was transformed to a SPUI, primarily to accommodate the heavy volumes fo traffic making the left-turn movement from northbound U-224 to westbound I-80. Many events took place at nearby Utah Olympic Park, and still others further south at Park City and Deer Valley, all of which put a heavyt strain on this interchange during that fortnight in February 2002. | |||||||||||

From the time this interchange was built, it was a partial cloverleaf:
straight diamond-type ramps serving eastbound I-80, and cloverleaf
ramps to and from westbound I-80. The westbound ramps were numbered 148A
& 148B. 148A, which led to the area north of the freeway, was
labelled "Roadside Business", and US40 EAST, the cloverleaf loop ramp
was 148B. Traffic flowing from westbound US 40 to westbound I-80 used
the other loop ramp.
In 1999, UDOT began a project to reconfigure the interchange in anticipation of increased traffic volumes using this interchange during the 2002 Olympics. The new design featured a spui accented by a flyover which allowed traffric heading from westbound US 40 to westbound I-80 to bypass the left turn which would otherwise be necessary. The reconfigured interchange opened in late 2001. |
