November
27, 1999 - The Tennessee Vols ended their 1999 regular season today by beating up
on their in-state little brother Vandy 38-10. A national television audience and a
crowd 105,781 watched as Tee Martin and his fellow seniors led the way, making it 17
straight victoroes over the Commodores. Martin went 14 for 21, throwing for 161
yards, and he rushed 8 times for 45 yards. Travis Henry had 19 rushes for 153 yards
before he left in a scary moment in the second quarter. Attempting to get into the
endzone, Henry was flipped up in the air and landed on his head, and lay still at the
goalline. For 20 ecruciating minutes, the entire stadium watched as the doctors
worked on him and put him on a backboard before carrying him off the field. At that
moment, you could hear a pin drop in the stadium, as I have never heard it that quiet in
there before. The Vols kept on rolling though. They scored first, as it was
Alex Walls booting the field goal from 26 yards. On the next possession, Henry
ripped through the line, dashing 67 yards to make it 10-0. Next, the Vols made it
17-0 when Tee Martin hit Leonard Scott on a screen pass, which he proceeded to take 33
yards for the score. Vandy finally got on the board on a Williams 12 yard run.
The drive was aided by a Deon Grant personal foul, in which during a TV timeout, Deon
decided to get in the VAnderbilt huddle and talk trash. After a fumble, Vandy was
able to add a field goal to cut the lead to 17-10. After the Henry injury, Phillip
Crosby punched it in from the 1, making the halftime score 24-10. After a ho-hum
effort by Jamal Lewis, Onterrio Smith stepped in and picked up where Henry left off.
After no scoring in the 3rd quarter, it was Smith on a 7 yard run to up the laed to 31-10,
and Smith again on a 51 yard run to account for the final of 38-10. The Vols finish
the regular season 9-2, and now sit back and wait for a bowl bid.

Some milestones and records to look for this season are:
The Vols need 10 victories to reach 700 all-time.
November 13, 1999 - That sound you
heard was the door slamming shut on the Vols season. Tennessee, ranked #3 in the
nation and #2 in the BCS, picked the the wrong time and place to play their worst game of
the season. Leading 24-14 in the third quarter, the Vols could not hold on,
allowing the Razorbacks the last two scores of the game, including the game winner with
3:44 to go. The Vols can't say the didn't have chances. With the ball and
driving at the end of the first half Tee Martin was sacked and knocked the Vols out of
field goal range. Twice more the Vols were inside the 20 and came away with no
points. Tee Martin passed for more than 300 yards, but it wasn't enough. His
first pass of the game was intercepted and taken back for the Arkansas touchdown.
Dropped passes were evident once again, with the worst being a 3rd and 3 drop by Cedrick
Wilson, which would have given the Vols 1st and Goal on the 10 yard line with 1:30 to
go. The next pass sailed incomplete and the Vols had lost the game. The key
difference in this game was that the one constant this season wasn't there - the
defense. The Vols showed no resemblence to the dominating group we have seen all
year. There were no sacks, and the secondary looked like the secondary's of a few
years ago. The overriding factor is the Vols wre not ready to play football for 60
minutes and the Razorbacks were. With this loss, any hopes of defending the
National Title went down the drain, as well as playing in a BCS Bowl game. The Vols
must regroup and prepare for Kentucky in Lexington next week.
