UU Cafe grew out of its predecessor, UUniverse Newsletter, founded April 27, 1995 by America Online's JJHum (Rev. Jone Johnson.)

That first issue announced a weekly UU chat topic inspired by the recent Oklahome City bombing: "'Random Acts of Senseless Kindness.' Susan Farrell, a UU in Oklahoma City still missing in the bomb blast, had a bumper sticker on her car with [that] phrase." We took that motto to heart, striving always to celebrate the small blessings and victories of the Unitarian Universalist community growing on the internet. UUniverse Newsletter and its successor UU Cafe proved to be popular, with a subscription list now around 1000 loyal readers. Our little chat announcement and newsletter expanded in 1996 to include this web site.

UUniverse, issue number one, goes on to explain that the "official" chat will be followed by another hour in a member room called UU Cafe. "More informal, it is almost like a coffee hour!"

Since that time (and it seems so long ago!) we have expanded our goals for UU Cafe newsletter and web site to include promoting communication and community- building efforts among UUs everywhere on the net, yet we strive to be true to our original conception as a center of thoughtfulness, informality and generosity. UU Cafe is staffed by volunteers.

Let us consider ways in which we can increase, not decrease, the kindness in the world. What do you do in your life to increase joy, beauty, kindness, especially the small, anonymous acts?
