NOTE: There are major
spoilers on this site! In fact, it will spoil EVERYTHING if you have not
currently read AFFC. This site has been updated to reflect the
repercussions and revelations in AFFC, and these changes affect the
summaries in AGOT, ACOK and ASOS!! NEW: If you have not read AFFC (or ASOS),
please scroll down to the bottom of the home page for Spoiler-Free
versions of the summaries for AGOT, ACOK and ASOS.
In
case you don't know, AGOT= A Game of Thrones, ACOK= A Clash
of Kings, ASOS= A Storm of Swords, and AFFC= A Feast for
Crows. For the 2 Dunk and Egg novellas, THK= The Hedge Knight and TSS=
The Sworn Sword.
Characters
marked with an asterisk (*) are deceased as of the latest novel. A
character with 2 asterisks (**) is deceased but brought back to life by
exceedingly rare sorcery or ability (there are only 2-3 characters that
fit this denomination). A character with 3 asterisks (***) died, was
raised, and finally died for good (there is only one such character
that has this signification).
Characters
in bold
are major characters in the overall plot (from my viewpoint). Most PoV
(Point-of-View) characters are major characters, but not all. A
character shown in both bold and Blue-lettering is both a major character and a PoV (example: Jon Snow). A character in both bold and italics is a minor PoV character (examples: Chett, Merrett Frey, Areo Hotah). A character only in bold lettering is someone who plays an important role in the story, though has never had a PoV (to date, anyway/ example: Sandor Clegane).
First
Mentioned lists key characters either: 1) deceased during the 38 years
prior to the start of A Game of Thrones (the reference point would
be approximately the beginning of King JaehaerysII's reign in year 259, -or- right after the
Tragedy at Summerhall, which we still have
precious little info available); 2) deceased during the course of the
novels without appearing; or 3) are important living characters who have
been mentioned but have not yet appeared in the story.
Legends
refers to characters (either real, imagined,
mythological or legendary) dead at least 38 years prior to the start of AGOT
(many will be dead hundreds or even thousands of years, or may not have
lived at all).
Introduced
characters is meant to list all characters who appear in the
novels; while, for sake of brevity, First Mentioned refers only to
key characters (since many meaningless characters are mentioned who never
appear or are mentioned because they died in battle but are insignificant
to the story).
Reading
the information in parantheses next to the Characters names at the
start of each chapter will provide more information than the body of
the chapter may reveal. To keep each chapter summary concise, I try to
only cover the key events. Some of the more minor, but still
interesting revelations, about a character can be found in their
description. So if you have the time, it is worth reading the
information to get the full experience.
This
summary is meant to be updated as each new novel comes out. Thus, in A
Storm of Swords, since Arstan was proven to
be Ser Barristan, his introduction in AGOT
has been altered to show he is Arstan; and the
introduction on Arstan in the chapter he appears
in ACOK has been removed. Similarly, since ManceRayder finally appears, his listing under First
Mentioned in AGOT will be removed, and he is now listed as an
Introduced character in ASOS.
For that reason, it can be worthwhile to go back and read the Character
write-ups in previous novels, even if you just want to read the
summaries for the most recent novel.
One
chapter in particular is different from most others, Daenerys IV in ACOK (chapter #49). Due to all the
visions she sees in the House of the Undying, I thought it best to
summarize each by number as the symbolism may be important to refer to
later on.
Please
note a couple of differences in the summaries for "The Hedge Knight"
and “The Sworn Sword” from Legends and Legends II
respectively: ‘Characters’ lists everyone who appears or is
mentioned in the story, asterisks (*) denoting characters who are either already dead, or who die in the novella.
Characters not listed have already been described in other summaries (for
example, Egg is listed in ACOK, where he is listed under legends;
and similarly Daemon Blackfyre is listed in ASOS
under legends and not in the ‘Characters’ section of TSS).
Page
numbers are listed as U.S. Hardcover first/ U.S. paperback edition second.
For ACOK, the page number is the U.S. Hardcover edition (I will add the US
paperback page numbers when it is released). Starting with ACOK and
progressing through the novels, I will list a POV character’s
chapter number with the convention (x) {y}, where ‘x’ refers
to the character’s chapter number in the current novel, while ‘y’
signifies the character’s total number of chapters since the
beginning of A Song of Ice and Fire.
Lastly,
for the Prologues of the first three novels, the Epilogue for the 3rd,
and several chapters in AFFC, I decided to include whose
Point-of-View the chapter is told from (not that you can’t figure it
out, but just for completeness). For example, next to the chapter title “Prologue”
for ASOS, in parentheses you will see: (Point-of-View: Chett). This notation will be quite common in AFFC,
as there are a number of chapters told from non-epic characters’
point-of-views. (Whereas, the EpicPoV characters we have been following throughout the
novels, like Jon, Davos, Bran, etc., will remain in their original format)
