    Mona biker

My resemblence to Mona Biker
When I was fifteen years old, my father bought a motorcycle for me (if you consider a Honda 90 with centrifical clutch a motorcycle). Wearing shorts, no helmet and often without shoes, I traveled the rural roads of Mississippi at a top speed of 45 mph. I lost my motorcycle in a "chicken challenge" on the center line of main street, Sturgis, Mississippi. I collided head-on with another motorcycle. That was the end of my motorcycle, but joyful memories of riding remained.

Birds of a featherI didn't think much about motorcycles until I met Craig Vechorik online at One & Only Internet Personals. (He likes to be called "Vech.") That's Vech in the photo: hot, sweaty and working in his shop. Isn't he cute? Vech is well-known for his expertise in repairing and restoring antique BMW motorcycles. We spent a lot of time together.
VechVech was restoring his 1956 BMW R26 and he taught me to prepare sheet metal for paint. Vech says a dream of his came true. He met a beautiful, intelligent woman that likes to work on motorcycles and her father owns a liquor store. (I think he's referring to me!)

He's animated when he talks of the quality
of BMW motorcycles and enthusiastic about
the history of antique, vintage and classic machines.
Visit Vech's website and you'll see what I mean.
Anything pre-1970 turns his head. Vech's enthusiasm
was contageious. He invited me to my first bike rally.

"She's Got a Ticket to Ride"

This is a photo of us at the the National BMW Owners of America 25th Anniversary Rally in Fredricksburg, Texas. The outfit is Vech's 1951 R51/3 and LS200 Steib sidecar. He rode it from Mississippi to Texas and won an award for oldest motorcycle ridden. The R51/3 and sidecar outfit really is a "Magic Carpet Ride." Elaine & Vech

I drove my Lincoln Towncar to the rally. I didn't know what to expect from a bunch of bikers. Vech and I camped out. The BMW crowd was a friendly, well-behaved and upstanding group of people. I tagged along when Vech judged the vintage motorcycle competition. Each BMW was a historical masterpiece. I realized they are "art." I was hooked. I wanted to ride again! I wanted another motorcycle, but not just any motorcycle. I wanted a BMW--an OLD BMW!

Dreams come true.
My 1968 R50 is considered a "vintage BMW." Bavarian Motor Works produced 19,036 R50's between 1960 and 1969. The last year of production for R50's with an Earle's fork was 1968--and I own one!

cycle      Classic (1955-1969),
      Vintage (1948-1954),
      None produced (1945-1948),
      World War II production (1940-1945),
      Antique (1923-1940)

This is a photograph of my 1968 BMW R50 as it appeared when I bought it.

Don't worry. Vech and I plan to use it as the project bike while Vech writes a pre-1970 BMW motorcycle repair and restoration manual (book).

When our project is finished, the book belongs to Vech, but the motorcycle will be in mint condition, Dover white and mine--all mine!

Y'all come back! (southern for "come visit me again") I'll post updates of our progress on the book and restoration project!

Elaine's 1969 R50
unrestored bike

Well, the bike is finished, but the book isn't. This photograph was taken at the BMW Riders Association national rally September, 1998. It won first place in the bike show! I entered my bike in three competitions and it placed first everytime. That Vech sure knows how to build bikes. Like a proud mama, I posted a page dedicated to my NEW 1968 BMW R50 motorcycle.

Oh, dear! It's been a million years since I rode a motorcycle, but I did get back in the saddle. Part of a story I wrote about overcoming fear is published in a book, The Tao of the Ride. I hope all you women riders will consider visiting me at the Annual Sturgis MISSISSIPPI All-bike rally and click the link to join the salute to Female Motorcyclists...
Elaine's BMW R52 PS....and guess what! In early 1999, Vech gave me a motorcycle! -- a 1950 R51/2! The motorcycle is a pile of rust that is missing parts and tossed into about ten cardboard boxes. In this photo, it's off to the sandblaster. Talk about a challenge?! On the bright side, when a person is married to Captain Wayback aka Vech, anything is possible!
