Issue No 7, the week of April 1 through April
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First off, thanks to the great response of the readers of this newsletter. The E mail request
for home pc delivery have been overwhelming, and as long as I don’t get any nasty mail from my Provider (AOL) as to my overuse of E-Mail, we will all be able to get a weekly update on the happenings in our beloved city of Las Vegas.
@The Strip Giants were fairly quiet this week, not a lot of press releases from the Hotel/Casinos. Hilton did extend it’s hostile takeover bid to purchase ITT, which owns the Desert Inn and Caesars Palace. Now ITT will have till April 25 th to respond.
@Like Steve Wynn doesn’t have enough treasure to dig up, his workers discovered a “treasure” of sorts while working on the Bellagio. Construction workers dug up four bags of old Dunes Casino Chips. It was mentioned that years ago casino operators used to bury in concrete chips that were taken out of circulation. Looks like the chip collectors market will have some unique chips to look forward to.
@update on the new Sahara sign, it is now completed. The sign is situated on top of an
arch followed by a headliner board, topped with a computerized billboard. On top of that two Camels are facing outwards holding up a slightly renovated Sahara logo. And finally, the last addition, an Arabian fort with a domed tower. Sahara once used to have the tallest sign. It looks like they had an attempt at that but the Las Vegas Hilton sign, still under construction, will top that attempt.
@Watch for Las Vegas to be featured on NBC “Today” show on April 7th. Filming for the show will be on Sunday the 6th, in front of the Caesars Palace Electronic Marquee. Al Roker will travel between the Stratosphere and Caesars, interviewing people along the way. For those lucky enough to visit the strip that day, taping
preparations will start at 3 pm, and finish around 7 pm..
@NBC is also taping a special at the Caesars Magical Empire named “The World’s Wildest Magic”. The special will feature Penn and Teller, The Amazing Jonathan, and Mac King . Taping will take place Friday through Sunday, airing date is tentatively set on April 26 th.

@ A recurring question that seems to pop up on the Newsgroup is an Astonishing one.
Almost weekly there is “What to do in Las Vegas” question. I have been searching the web for two years and have come up with hundred sites dedicated to Las Vegas, and there are way too many for me to mention that offer detailed listings of what to do while visiting our wonderful city. Make your browser work for you. Type in “Las Vegas” into any browser and you will be showered with a thousand addresses of Vegas related materials.
This week I will do general attractions, next week I will have a special issue on Visiting Las Vegas with Kids.
Http://www.Intermind.net/im/things.html **** a list of no less 100 things to do.
Http://www.lvnexus.net/relocation/96.htm **** Phone Numbers to 96 places to go.
Http://a1-lasvegas-wt.com/attract/attract.html **** from the Where to in Las Vegas
magazine,has addresses and descriptions.
Http://www.pcap.com/attracts.htm **** over and over a great informative site.
Http://cityview.com/lasvegas/att.html**** Cityview offers a nice page check out some of
it other areas also.
Http://vegasnet.com/visitor **** good site
Http://www.computerjournal.com/informer.htm ****very nice website with lots of
specialty areas, also available in German.
If you enter the address just up to “.com” you should enter the Homepage or Index, from
there you can search through other areas the Site has to offer.

@ The Best of Las Vegas, the yearly gathering of votes by the Las vegas Review Journal, is by no means a scientific poll. This year (their 16th) had a total of 2040 ballots, 648 more than last year, but 649 less than their record year in 1995. So considering Las Vegas has over a million inhabitants, the choices for this yearly award ceremony could be taken with a grain of salt. Yet with the hundreds of choices for dining , Hotels, attractions etc. the Best Of Las Vegas is a welcome asset to deciding where to go and what to avoid.
The complete listing is available on the Las Vegas review Journal website. Http://www.lvrj.com
The Big winner was the New York, New York,
which has taken up a favorite spot in most
Las Vegans minds. Best Strip Hotel, Best Hotel Architecture, Best Hotel Attraction, and Best (ahum)Rollercoaster. (This of course before it was closed indefinitely for hairline cracks on the track). It looks like it needs to be redesigned to reduce the stress on the tracks. The other new hotels the Stratosphere and The Orleans fared good also, the Strat grabbed up a lot of touristy and scenic view awards and also best gourmet restaurant.
The Orleans was voted best locals, Best Lounge, Best Coffee shop, and Best Shrimp Cocktail which was a winner for the Golden Gate for years. The biggest upset and arguably the most controversial is that the Luxor’s Manhattan Buffet took away the
Honors of the RIO for Best Buffet. I guess I will have to try that one now.
Again visit the LVRJ site for a complete listing.

@Even though ITT keeps denying that there is pressure from Hilton’s hostile
take over bid, it is apparent that ITT is selectively picking and choosing its
options to make the take-over less appealing to Hilton.
Last week ITT announced it has halted and postponed the construction of the
Planet Hollywood Resort, clearly listening to what Hilton had said it would
do if the take over became effective. The Hilton does not believe that the
Planet Hollywood Casino would be an asset to the Vegas casino world, and
will not construct the new resort that was set to go up next to the Desert Inn.
Also related to the topic is that ITT is interested in selling the Desert Inn,
currently being renovated, furthermore there is some swapping at the top. Bill
Hornbuckle, who was in charge of the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino
will take the Presidency spot at Caesars, while the President of Caesars
World Inc., Peter Boynton, will be responsible for overseeing the
development of the Planet Hollywood if this will happen at all.
Also ITT will now share part of its 900 million face lift with Gordon Group
Holdings Ltd. who developed the Forum Shops. The partnership will assume
a $220 Million share to develop a shopping area in front of Caesars adjoining
the strip. The project will be called Circus Maximus, and you will get a
similar shopping extravaganza as the Forum, featuring 10 story high roof with
a projected sky the length of two football fields, featuring restaurants, retail
shops and entertainment features including Chariot races in a hilltop Roman
town.

@As the Las Vegas Hilton sign reached its top height of 279 feet, it is the
tallest sign in Las Vegas. But last week the simulator space shuttles were
lowered into the new Star Trek Adventure location at the hotel once famous
for Elvis Presley concerts (then known as the International) . The Star Trek
experience will begin in July 1997.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@MEGABUCKS craze is over! After various weeks of high traffic in front of
every Megabucks machine the four diamonds lined up for Las Vegan Sue
Henley, a 47 year old construction inspector, while she had played about one
hundred dollars on a New York, New York Double Diamonds progressive
machine. She said she had a hunch about it. She had a hunch earlier in the
year when she won $50,000 at the LV Hilton. Some people have all the luck.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@Ground was broken on the Sands Venetian Resort project on a Monday
morning, mostly private ceremony. The project is off to a very bumpy start
since rumors speculate the hotel will be non-union. Since the inception of the
plan the unions have been scrutinizing the initial safety and traffic flow
reports, which have so far delayed the project start. Sheldon Adelson, former
Sands owner, sold his very profitable COMDEX expo for $800 million and
will use those funds to finance the venetian resort which will feature the
Italian city of Venice look, including Canals and Gondolas. He says the
unions actions are comparative to a “Terrorism campaign”. The resort is
scheduled for completion in 1999. With a second addition in the year 2000.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@This week I browsed through some hotel-casino web sites and I
encountered a lot of improvements over the same sites from a few months
ago. Some of these hotel pages are a better, more instant approach to find out
what’s playing or what the latest is on their improvements or future
attractions. There is even some that feature special discount room rates, or
reservations can be made by E -mailing their prepared registration form.
Most Resorts have their own page, as well as pages representing their parent
company. Like the Hilton Hotels page (Http://www.Hilton.com) is very
boring, meanwhile the Las Vegas Hilton has it own page
(Http://www.lv-hilton.com) that is very exciting with lots of animation, sound
bites of their “Starlight Express” show, as well as anything you want to know
about the Star Trek experience.
Circus Circus (http://www.circuscircus.lasvegas.com) has a good page,
brightly designed, with online registration for their new west tower, rates at
$45-$65, and gives a list of blackout dates for more expensive rates.
Guaranteed that these black out dates work for most hotel rate increases.
At the Bottom of the page is a circus tent. This is the Circus Circus
enterprises link and will take you to all their properties. Excalibur and Monte
Carlo are (Http://www.excalibur-casino.com)(Http://www.Monte-Carlo.com)
lacking the excitement of their Vegas counterparts, they give the necessary
information without fanfare. The Luxor(Http://www.Luxor.com) is probably
the nicest designed webpage of CCE. Beautiful graphics, animation, online
reservations and information on the resorts new additions. Just a note: the
resort will have a VIP opening party this Thursday (4-17-97) to show of their
new additions. It is by invitation only. The Mirage
http://www.themirage.com) and Treasure Island
(http://treasureislandlasvegas.com) are some of the best pages Las Vegas
hotels have to offer. The classy design reflects the what the resorts are all
about. The sites also feature movie clips of their main attractions, the Volcano
and the Pirate Battle, soundbites, photos and online reservations.
The Tropicana (hhtp://www.tropicana.lv.com) was one of the first hotels to
have a web page, the original is still very much in tact, but improvements
including video files have been added. I found out that the new Folies Bergere
show will open April 18th.
There are so many that we have to continue this in a later edition, some are so
high tech that I have not been able to go through them without my system
freezing up. The New York, New York looks like it can be the best page but
I have not been able to get through it all the way. Anybody else having that
problem?
That is all for this week. Like always, let me know what you think, or if you
have suggestions. Be on the lookout for ballots for our version of the Best of
Las Vegas within the next few weeks or so.

It was the week for casino presidents to play in the big sandbox this week,
after last weeks report of Sheldon Adelson breaking ground on the Grand
Venetian resort, on the spot of the former Sands Hotel, this week it was the
president of Hilton Hotels Gaming Operations, Arthur Goldberg, to don a
hard-hat and shovel some dirt on the site of the Paris Las Vegas Project.
The project, originally proposed by Bally’s, was also acquired when Hilton
bought Bally’s. Paris will be located just to the south of Bally’s, and behind
the Aladdin. It will feature a 50 story Eiffel Tower and reproductions of the
Louvre, Arc de Triumph, Opera House, Champ d”Ellysees, and Train Station.
The project will cost $750 million dollars (look at the NY2 to see what that
will buy) and add 3000 rooms to the Vegas hotel room count. The resort is
set to open in April 1999 amid a new boom of hotel openings for Vegas.
Including the Bellagio, The Venetian, Project Paradise, the New Caesars, El
Rancho, and Aladdin.

Nellis Air force Base has their big air show this week, celebrating the Air
Force’s 50th anniversary. The base is offering performances by its famous
Thunderbirds precision flying team, as well as the top teams from at least a
half dozen foreign countries. For more information about the Nellis Air Show,
visit their site at Http://www.nellis.af.mil/airshow/index.htm.
The History Channel will be airing a documentary on the History of Flight in
Southern Nevada on April 28th at 6 am PDT. So, overall a big week for
aviation in Las Vegas. The Museum at McCarran Airport has also dedicated
a display to the History of Aviation in Southern Nevada.
The Discovery Channel will be filming a documentary on the 50th
anniversary, including the airshow.

In Short: The Sahara lit up their new sign April 17th, and the construction at
the hotel is showing some impressive changes to the aging exterior of the
Resort. *** Producer Aaron Spelling will bring back Las Vegas to the small
screen in a proposed new series featuring private eyes. Spelling also
produced the “Vega$” show between 1978-81. *** Terry Gilliam, of Monty
Python fame has taken over the directors chair on the “Fear and Loathing in
Las Vegas” movie project, scheduled to start filming in June. *** For any
local information on what’s filming around town, call (702) 487-2727.***
Gameworks opened on the Showcase Mall, next to the MGM Grand. The
high tech arcade is a project of Dreamworks SKG (Spielberg,Katzenberg and
Geffen), Sega Enterprises and Universal Studios. There will be a grand
Opening May 10th.***

The World Wide Web was once a free for all. Now more and more
companies are starting to sue companies or private pages bearing their name.
Last week Station Casinos barred a company from using the names of their
Las Vegas casinos in their web addresses. This week the new trend barred a
company from using MGM Grand, Mirage Resorts and Circus Circus
Enterprises properties names in relation with their gambling and information
websites.
If you have the following web addresses in your Hot Lists, be aware they will
change, as well that they are not the actual property run pages.
Http://www.Mirage-resorts.com, MGM-grand.com, and
Vegas-Excaliber.com
The real addresses to these are Http://www. theMirage.com, and Http://www.
mirageresorts.com. Also Http://www.mgmgrand.com and as I posted last
week the Excalibur has a page at Http://www.circuscircus.org. Click on the
circus tent to see all the other Circus properties.

What is the greatest visual experience in Las Vegas...? Of course the view
from the Stratosphere! Well aren’t we lucky that the folks of KLAS TV put a
camera way at the top. Locally they use it to keep us up to date on traffic
situations, but on the internet it give us an instant window to our favorite city,
much like its predecessor the Polo Towers, which has been operating a
camera on top of the hotel for close to a year. Now if we can get the Rio to
put one on top with their soon to open Cajun restaurant on the top of their
new tower we should have the valley covered quite well.
