Parlett was a prolific comic artist who was at his peak in the
1930’s.
His
work appeared in a great number of old comic papers and several comic annuals.
He created many comic characters, notably the dastardly “Vernon the
Villain”. Vernon appeared in the
Jester comic paper and Jester Annual. On the next page a few colourful scenes
from Vernon’s adventures in the 1937 Jester Annual are reproduced. This
particular adventure is set in a haunted old windmill and a film is about to be
made. The characters involved are Handsome Harry and his girl friend Mildred who
are movie actors. Vernon is always likely to appear at any time and try his
hardest to put one over on Harry. He is usually quite violent and gets up to the
dirtiest of tricks. At the end of every comic episode poor old Vernon comes off
second best and is usually left looking in a very sorry
state.
