Boy, I can't believe I am getting into this so much.... I have very few memories of this time period, but I do have a few most of which, are from when I was a little girl.. So naturally, they are thru the eyes of a child.. But now, in researching and reading some of these very interesting sites and articles..WOW...... It takes on a whole different perspective, through the eyes of an adult . Let me share a few of the thoughts and memories that have been criss crossing my mind in setting up this room here... And let me just add at this point.. I HATED, HATE, HISTORY...... I have no clue why I was ever in honors history class.. because I absolutely hated history.. BORRRING ... or so it was then.. or maybe the way it was taught then.. I think I received my grades solely on reports I turned in , as I do like to research things...and write. But now, I find I am going back in search of these things that at that time, was of no interest to me.. Well to begin with... I hated the music then.. YUK! My Mom listened to the Big Bands all the time on those fat, thick, records of hers.. And I thought.. how can she stand that stuff.. Oh I had a few favorites okay.. but definitely NOT the Big Band stuff... But now in searching for those songs of long ago.. and listening to them.. I LOVE them... what a flare they have... Needless to say, my children think I have totally flipped out.. One son just came in and asked " WHAT is THAT your listening to Mom?" and his friend that is slurping up some soup commented, "boy, that's straaange music"... So, I guess, it is all in the eyes of the beholder... and perhaps, "age" playing a big part as to how we interpret things.... Glenn Miller, Dorsey, and Les Brown where some of the Big Names during this era.. Course my Mom played alot of the Andrews Sisters music also.. My Mom, sister and I use to harmonize right along with them... And as I am listening to the sounds of "In the Mood" playing in the background as I am typing, flashbacks of the swooshey sound, my Aunt's skirt use to make, when she'd get ready to go out on a "hot date"... Boy.. I haven't remembered these things in some time... My Mom and her hair done up in that famous Andrew Sister's style.. I guess I could babble on, in setting up this room and it's decor, I am getting caught up in the mood of that time... and enjoying it! But it was also a time of not such good times As our country became involved in The Second World War... So moving right along here... I didn't want to just set up a place with links and such, but to also create an atmosphere of that time period and as the music says.. you need to get "In The Mood" ... If you have a link to a WWII site or a site with information pertaining to that time period and you would like to pass it on, please send it to me, care of the VetCenter, with WWII in the subject heading.. I will add it to those I have listed already... I hope those from this era will share some of their memories here as well... I am hoping to hear from the WWII Veterans or family members.. This was MY DAD's war and sadly I don't have any memories of that... A fading image in my mind is all.. of a very handsome ( but of course ), Soldier in uniform that sat on top of our mantle.. For some reason, I remember him mentioning GreenLand.. but no clue why. So I for one would appreciate hearing your experiances.. AND from some of this researching, I found it most difficult to find information on nurses or female veterans then... Course I know it was not the norm then.. But surely we had women in the service then? I know I have been reading about how "women" where used for properganda purposes then.. to romanticize the War etc.. etc.. More on that to follow..... For now thou...
