This is a reference guide to the resources available on the Endicott-Taft period of American Harbor Defense (mid-1880's thru World War I). The emphasis is on the holdings of the National Archives, but other sources will be noted.
The National Archives, one of the best sources of material available, has an abundance of information on this era. Unfortunately, finding what you want can be time-consuming, and quite exasperating. For instance, the records of the Endicott Board (i.e. the Board on Fortifications and Other Defenses), which was composed of civilians and officers from the Engineers, Ordnance, and Navy, can be found under the Records of the Office of the Chief of Engineers - where it is specifically listed in the Archive's general guide. On the other hand, the records of the Taft Board (also known as the National Coast Defense Board) are not so readily identified - one must look in the Records of the War Department General and Special Staffs, under the Board to Revise the Report of the Endicott Board.
The information is there....but finding it can be a project of its own.
Given that records at the National Archives are only pulled for researchers a limited number of times each day, knowing where to find the desired materials ahead of time can prevent wasting valuable research time. Therefore, I have tried to create a general guide to assist people interested in researching this period of history. The information I present is accurate, to the best of my knowledge. But this should not in any way be construed as an official index......
