The Vietnam Project
In May 1989, a group of Vietnam veterans from
West Texas gathered at Texas Tech University to discuss what they might do,
in a positive way, about their experiences in Vietnam. That group's immediate
decision was to form a Vietnam Archive and begin collecting and preserving
materials relating to the American Vietnam experience. In November 1989, the
Board of Regents of Texas Tech University established the Vietnam Center,
with the dual missions of funding and guiding the development of the Vietnam
Archive and encouraging continuing study of all aspects of the American Vietnam
experience. |

Women in Vietnam Approximately 11,000 American
military women were stationed in Vietnam during the war. Close to ninety
percent were nurses in the Army, Navy, and Air Force Because of the guerilla
tactics of Vietnam, many women were in the midst of the conflict. There was
no front, no such thing as "safe behind our lines." Many were wounded; most
spent time in bunkers during attacks. The names of the eight military women
who died in Vietnam are listed on the "Wall." |

The Vietnam
War, This site does not try to document the entire history
of the Vietnam War but is intended as a picture essay, illustrating some
of the incredible conditions under which soldiers from both sides lived,
fought, played and ultimately died. The legendary combat photographer, Tim
Page, took almost all of the images shown; they are nothing short of stunning.
I have tried to minimize the download time. If you wish to add any comments
or share your experience with us on this site you will find email links on
every page. |

Revisiting Vietnam, Americans continue to brood about
the purpose and the toll of the war. In Vietnam, it's called "The American
War," and the anniversary is a time for victory celebrations. Still, many
Vietnamese are eager to accept Americans as friends - and business partners.
And many Vietnamese who sided with the U.S. during the war continue to
suffer. |

War Myths, A compendium of the most virulent myths to come
out of the Vietnam War. Some of these myths, because they have been repeated
so many times, and have been showcased in some deplorable books and movies
about the war, have taken on the status of "fact" in the minds of an alarming
number of people. While some of these myths can be exposed as apocryphal
tales by examining the statistics compiled during and after the war by
independent sources, others are impossible to disprove |

War Statistics, The Vietnam War has been the subject of thousands
of newspaper and magazine articles, hundreds of books, and scores of movies
and television documentaries. The great majority of these efforts have
erroneously portrayed many myths about the Vietnam War as being facts. [Richard

US ARMYCENTER FOR MILITARY HISTORY |
The Center of Military History (CMH) is responsible
for the appropriate use of history throughout the U.S. Army. Traditionally,
this mission meant recording the official history of the Army in both peace
and war, while advising the Army Staff on historical matters. In terms of
this tradition, the Center traces its lineage back to those historians under
the Secretary of War who compiled the Official Records of the Rebellion,
a monumental history of the Civil War begun in 1874, and to a similar work
on World War I prepared by the Historical Section of the Army War
College. |

History Of the Vietnam War It's all too
easy to focus on the brief period in Vietnam's history when the United States
was fighting to help the South Vietnamese Government become established and
survive. In the end, South Vietnam fell to a North Vietnamese invasion several
years after U.S. forces withdrew. But this was not Vietnam's first or last
war. |
