What goes on . . .

February 28, 2004

The Clamor Music Fest is tonight (in Ann Arbor, MI; Athens, OH; Austin, TX; Brooklyn, NY; Denver, CO; Easthampton, MA; Gainesville, FL; Grand Rapids, MI; Greensboro, NC; Houston, TX; Inland Empire, CA; Los Angeles, CA; Madison, WI; Milwaukee, WI; Minneapolis, MN; Nashville, TN; New Orleans, LA; New York, NY; Oakland, CA; Olympia, WA; Pittsburgh, PA; Portland, OR; Richmond, VA; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; St. Louis, MO; Syracuse, NY; Toledo, OH; Tucson, AZ; Urbana, IL; Van Wert, OH; Winona, MN; & Worcester, MA).

Most of these have some indy media connection (Colorado IMC, Gainesville's Civic Media Center . . . even my beloved Zine World [Nashville]). So you might consider checking it out even if (like me) you don't have much interest in rock shows.

Dillon Brown, a Ph.D. candidate in English and spokesman for Graduate Employees Together-UPenn, said that about 400 graduate assistants had pledged to walk the picket lines and not teach. The proposed bargaining unit would include about 1,000 people. "Spirits are up," he said after the first day of picketing. "The campus seems quieter than usual."
-- from an article by Scott Smallwood in today's Chronicle (but don't bother looking for it if you don't have a subscription). The management's response is a priceless variant on the old "I never borrowed it, it was in perfect condition when I returned it, and it was already broken when he lent it to me" defense:
Penn officials say they are not opposed to unionization generally, but maintain that the graduate students are not employees. Additionally, Penn contends that its pay and benefits packages for graduate assistants are competitive.

The good computer went out the front door today along with my hopes, my dreams, and my wife. Any regular readers are hereby notified that updates may be spotty for a while.

February 25, 2004

The UK faculty strike is in full effect. Meanwhile, AUFA chapter of CAUT is striking in Nova Scotia. My source also reports that
There are also 2 strikes in Quebec, this time for contingent faculty only (Quebec contract academic staff are organized in separate unions from the faculty, normally by the FNEEQ-CSN). I will get you info on those strikes ASAP.

The US secretary of education says the NEA are "terrorists". Would everyone just please stop treating these usurpers with respect already? (Director's cut -- edited 2/25 for excess spewage).

February 22, 2004

Mike Whybark found this textz.com site ("we are the & in copy & paste") via "oldtimey" (no link). I got it from him. You got it from me (unless not).

Naomi Wolf has accused Harold Bloom of sexual harrassment. Camile Paglia has already weighed in (on Bloom's side of course). This has the makings of the juciest gossip in the litworld since Maynard v. Salinger.

February 20, 2004

The AUT , together with the NUS plan to paralyse universities across the British Isles: beginning in Wales; then in Northern Ireland & Scotland; finally in England itself (beginning February 24).

Story in The Guardian (2/13). More on the UK Teachers Strike.

February 19, 2004

Michael Arnzen's Pedablogue had an entry on textbooks last month. I Am Frequently Asked Questions recently discovered Neal Postman (scroll down to Feb. 15). Mathemagenic manages to be fairly interesting in spite of its new-age-corporate slant (KM --"knowledge management").

I got my Vlorbik award today. Eat your hearts out.

Journal of Algorithms Editorial Board Revolts (along with a good comments thread; at Freedom to Tinker 2/9/04 [via Danny Yee]). A very hopeful sign. Price-gouging by journals has been a scandal on the academic industry for a long time, but seems finally to have reached some kind of crisis. Why, just last month, I read this (pdf) Editorial by Robion Kirby in the Notices of the AMS.

Next: the real scandal: textbooks.

Some well-put remarks at University Diaries about Invisible's "Crankiest Post Ever" (via Caveat Lector).

Directory of Personal Home Pages at Indiana University Bloomington.

Jonathan Dresner's Hawai'i Strike Report: Thoughts on Unions and Institutions at an Impasse (in the "group blog" Cliopatria) begins by citing the current issue of Academe (on "The New Academic Labor System"). I spotted this link via this thread in Invisible Adjunct.

February 7, 2004

Sean Thoughtworm has recently put up an online index to his outstanding Zine Rack (hosted by NewPages). Also the new Zine World came in today's mail. I'll be updating my zine pages accordingly Real Soon Now.

February 6, 2004

a schoolyard blog is the math ed blog I've been looking for since I started. Remember this apparent astroturf from back in June? Well, it's still there.

Wait, what's this? Blog of a math teacher! Holy Google! How I love this world wide web.

The "annoying posts " by Kevin Walzer in Invisible Adjunct (mentioned by me yesterday without proper citation) date from the beginning of my participation in blogging. Start at Getting to Yes? (6/28/03) if for some reason you want to learn more about this.

More posts by me are to be found in IA threads beginning on 6/14, 6/27, 7/13, 7/17, 7/28, 9/21 . . . (2003).

Then there's this editing software religious war.

Reduced Salary, Reduced Effort? asks a current thread in Invisible Adjunct -- the first I've felt compelled to weigh in on for at least a few weeks. Good posts from David Foster (Photon Courier), Kevin Holtsbury (Collected Miscellany), and Laura of Apartment 11D; there's even this thread in John Bruce's blog (In the Shadow of Mt. Hollywood) which continues the discussion.

Also there's this weird troll that reminds me of Kevin Walzer's incredibly annoying posts back when I started reading. I'll look 'em up in a bit; time to share the computer.

February 3, 2004

"The Eggers-Keller Conspiracy Theory" is an interview with Karl Wenclas (of the Underground Literary Alliance) at Manhattan Transfer yesterday; it came to my attention via Maud Newton. (Addendum: I should have said "...an `interview' with" Wenclas; evidently MT made the whole thing up. Sorry, Karl.)

Sure, the "Bush in 30 Seconds" ads are too cool to be allowed on TV -- but what American really needs as a halftime show at its national celebration of macho hooey is this Poisonous Legacy video from Bushflash (943 K & not for the weak of stomach). Here's the Campaign Against Depleted Uranium.
