Divide by Zero Fonts

[How To] [FAQ] [Legal]

These are a collection of Truetype fonts which I have created more or less for fun. They are entirely free to use, but they cannot be resold -- as part of a collection on CD, for instance. (Check out the Legal Stuff page for clarification.)

Enjoy these fonts, and mail me if you find them useful! Also, check out the FAQ for more info and some new Divide By Zero banners you can download!

NEW! Click on the [demo] link after a font's description (where applicable) to see a demo I made for the [Divide By Zero] Typography Romp!
If you have Windows 95, I highly recommend you get the Windows 95 Font Smoother (straight from Microsoft). This is a utility that came with Plus! that they are now releasing for free; it anti-aliases fonts in almost all your programs, which makes even Bad Fonts look Good. This utility is built into Windows 98 (simply turn it on under Screen Properties... Effects).

CODONCODON (All keyboard characters (Caps=Lower), some special) is yet another scan job, this time from Spring Break 99, where I was home sick with not one but two simultaneous illnesses. Now I'm back at school and all better! This font is like DNA, like magnets, like a biological agent. Heavy; best for headlines. By the way, I'm now officially a Communication Design minor here at CMU, hooray! (10 April 1999)
Zinc BoomerangZinc Boomerang (All keyboard characters, some foreign and special) is a cartoony display font inspired by the wonders of static operational semantics inference rules. All the keyboard characters are available and more, but the capital and lowercase letters are the same. I think this font is really nice; enjoy! (9 March 1999)
Colophon DBZColophon (All keyboard characters, some Foreign and Special) is another scanned font from my Christmas '98 withdrawl. The capital letters have serifs, the lowercase don't -- I think this font looks good in all lowercase. Very smooth, almost cartoony, and suitable for both headlines and body text. (17 January 1999)
Cosine KatieCosine Katie (Caps / Lower [same], some punctuation) is a strange font which I made over my Christmas Break this year with some nice new pens I got. It isn't often that I make scanned fonts, but this is one! It's got a weird futuristic grafitti look to it, and it has only the lowercase letters and a little bit of punctuation. Type one of the missing characters for a picture of Cosine Katie herself, the only girl whose hair is a trigonometric function! (11 January 1999)
Tombats 4Tombats Four (52 total glyphs). Woo, another Tombats font! Print these out on stickers and paste them all over the place. I'm done with exams finally! Check out my notebook from this semester. Enjoy! (13 December 1998)
Boring BoronBoring Boron (Caps, Lower, numerals, punctuation, some special / foreign) could maybe be called Tom's New Helvetica, but then it wouldn't be my first font starting with B and be my fourth Periodic Table font! The uppercase set of this was actually a font I made quickly as part of making Angstrom; I touched it up a little and finished it off. I love how delightfully inept this font is. Contains all keyboard characters, and more -- not to mention the Euro! (*snicker*) (3 December 1998)
I suck at golfI suck at golf (Caps/Lower [same], numbers, punctuation, some special). I really do suck at golf quite badly; I'm happy when I get the ball in the hole under 10 shots... (the postscript exporter shortens it to 'I suck at go' which is almost equally true). Bad news: I am currently experiencing repetitive stress injury in my wrist from all my typing, drawing, and keyboard playing. I'm probably going to be taking a break from the computer for a while. It might drive me insane, though, so conversely I might be back very soon. This font is all lowercase and suitable for headlines and goofy body text. Somewhat hand-kerned. (11 October 1998)
Hydrogen ScoreHydrogen (Caps/Lower [same], numerals, most punctuation, some special) is a really harsh digial font. Never use a computer which reminds you of this font. This is another in my Periodic Table series of fonts, and my first one starting with an 'H'. (3 September 1998) [demo]
Action JacksonAction Jackson (Caps/Lower [same], numbers, some Punctuation, some special). This is a sort of comic book action font. The letters are rotated and lit differently to give a dynamic feel. Hey! I'm back at school! Expect more fonts and Notebook Pages soon. I'm off to the track now ... Enjoy! (23 August 1998)
May QueenMay Queen (Caps/Lower [same], numerals (sort of), some punctuation and special) is my first cursive font; it looks best in a program that pays attention to the kerning, though at small sizes it doesn't really matter. This font is for Liz Phair. Come on Liz, put your new album out already! Hand kerned. (5 July 1998) [demo]
Real BttsoiefReal Bttsoief (Caps/Lower [same], numbers, some Punctuation, some special). I put a full page of my handwriting into an OCR program at work (one of those things that takes scanned images of text and turns them into usable text format) -- the text it generated for the entire page, apparently an attempt to be insulting: "Real Bttsoief". This font doesn't look anything like my handwriting, but this is my big "Hey, screw you too!" to OCR software everywhere. Smallish, uneven, technology gone wrong. In other words, Real Bttsoief. It's kerned, hand hinted; Enjoy! (27 June 1998) [demo]
ResurgenceResurgence (Caps/Lower [same], numerals, some punctuation and special) is another from my school notebooks. It has an open, vaguely futuristic look, and is pretty readable at any size. There are no uppercase characters, so I think this is best suited for headlines or modern designs which don't use capital letters anyway. Kerned, hand hinted, Enjoy! (20 June 1998) [demo]
Dysprosium (66)Dysprosium (Caps/Lower [same], some Punctuation, some special), part of the Periodic Table series, I guess, is a sort of long, round, and excited font. Best suited for headlines. Kerned, hand hinted, Enjoy! (27 May 1998) [demo]
Tombats ThreeTombats Three (52 glyphs) - New Tombats font! 52 new icons, faces, drawings, etc. Some of these are really weird. And some characters from comic books I used to draw when I was little... Enjoy! (24 May 1998)
InitialInitial (Caps/Lower [same], Numbers, Punctuation, some special) is a really nice usable font to celebrate my last day of my first year of college. Check it out! I have to go to my math review session now... er, bye. (2 May 1998) [demo]
Tom's HeadacheTom's Headache (Caps, Lower, most punctuation, some special) - is what my headache looks like right now. Not meant to be a pretty font. (The headache is caused by Too Much English Homework and Not Enough Money. If you are my English Teacher, stop giving me so many papers, and if you are Carnegie Mellon University, stop taking all my money.) This font looks good in all caps, but caps and lowercase are both there. (19 April 1998)
Robot TeacherRobot Teacher (Caps, Lower, Numbers, Punctuation, some special) didn't come out as I had planned, though actually I think I like this better. It's a child-like happy font which I can't really describe. Hand-hinted and properly kerned. All of the keyboard characters are there -- enjoy!(11 April 1998) [demo]
Greenwich MeanGreenwich Mean (Caps / Lower [same], some punctuation, some special) - is a nice even electronic circuit-board type font. A very faithful reproduction of what I drew in my physics notebook. I'm sorry it's been ages since I've done a font, folks, but I'm back at it and it feels good. Hand hinted for small sizes, but it works best for headlines. Enjoy! (12 March 1998)
Null Pointer;Null Pointer; (Caps/Lower [same], numbers, most punctuation, some special) I guess is named this because people keep thinking I'm a physics major with all my physics-named fonts. I'm in Computer Science! This font is heavy and computerish, with no diagonal lines at all. Most of the keyboard characters are there. (29 January 1998) [demo]
Antimony BlueAntimony Blue (Caps, Lower, Numbers, most punctuation, some special) - is a pretty difficult-to-read futurist font. I think it actually does look cool when used for a lot of text (as opposed to just a headline), and I've included uppercase and lowercase, numerals and most punctuation. It's well hinted so it looks okay even at small sizes. (3 December 1997)
YikatuYikatu (Caps/Lower [small caps], numbers, most punctuation, some special) is the name of a sort of Club that I made up with my cousins when I was a wee child; here is the font in honor of that now defunct (?) organization. It will work for headlines or body text, though perhaps a little cryptic. (17 November 1997)
LinearLinear (Caps/Lower [same], some punctuation/special) - to celebrate my 100,000th hit (!) I've tried to bring you some Old School Tom 7 fontage -- this is a face which has appeared in my notebooks sporadically for quite a long time. It's for headlines only, and though I did hand hint it, it does quite a number on low-resolution bitmap displays. It is best suited for 48-point or larger printed headlines. (16 November 1997)
ValiumValium (Caps/Lower [same], some punctuation/special) is a sort of twisted, evil-looking typeface. "It is like an overgrown tree, like a viny magic staff, like a dangerous virus." ... (14 November 1997)
Natural LogNatural Log (Caps, Lowercase (lots of repetiton, but some are different), some punctuation) is a rather simple font, following the design philosophy that the absence of the expected is as striking as the presence of the unexpected. This would work for body text, but be careful as there are no numbers (see, lack of the expected! ;)) Hand kerned -- I'm never doing that again! (2 November 1997)
DonnerDonner (Caps/Lower [same], numbers, some punctuation/special) is the name of my residence hall at college. If you were freezing to death and writing in blood with a sharpened stick, this is what it might look like. I would recommend this for headlines only, and it is somewhat difficult to read at small sizes. (28 September 1997)
Signal to NoiseSignal To Noise (Just Lowercase, Caps) has two sets of characters, the lowercase are clean ('signal to' at left) and the uppercase are noisy ('noise' at left). The letters are tall and thin unicase characters. Designed for headlines only. (25 September 1997)
Tombats SmiliesTombats Smilies (53 total glyphs) is my second Dingbats (Tombats) collection, this time with a "smiley face" theme -- though to be perfectly fair, only 34% of them are actually smiling. Let me know what you think of Tombats vs Regular Fonts, I can be equally prolific with both (though these do take a bit longer). (16 September 1997)
7 hours7 hours (Lowercase/Caps [same], Numbers) is how much time I'm supposed to be spending per week on Physics; here's what I did instead. Actually it's been quite busy since I've gotten to college so my previously prolific nature has suffered somewhat. Hopefully soon I will be Back In Action. In any case, this is a line-based font with, well, I don't know what to call them. Look at the picture. Designed for headlines only. (6 September 1997)
AngstromAngstrom (Caps/Lower [same], Some Punctuation, Some Special) is a blurry techno-looking headlines font. Looks better at large sizes. (31 July 1997)
TetanusTetanus (Lowercase, Caps, Numbers, some Punctuation/Special) is a typeface made to look somewhat like barbed wire twisted to shape letters. It looks good both in all lowercase/capitals and mixed case. Good for headlines and acceptable body text. (25 July 1997) [demo]
Melanie (Girly)Melanie (Caps/Lower [same], Some Punctuation, Some Special) is as girly a font as I could make. There are big dots as serifs, and the strokes are very loopy and decorative, yet uneven and cartoony. Or rather, it's Girly. There is only a lowercase (more like unicase) set, so it is best used for headlines. (14 July 1997) [demo]
DavisDavis (Lowercase, Caps, Numbers, some Punctuation/Special) is a quasi-computerish but messy typeface. It looks good in all lowercase (at left) as well as with the standard capitalization. Works very well for headlines and is also readable as body text. (4 July 1997) [demo]
Doctor AzulDoctor Azul (Caps/Lower [same], Numbers, Most Punctuation, Some Special) is a handwriting-like font with serifs and little diagonal thingies that I don't know the typography term for. Mostly for headlines; I may do a lowercase set eventually. Hand Hinted! (20 June 1997)
Antelope HAntelope H (Lower/Caps [see below], Numbers, some Punctuation/Special) is my Top-hat style Headline font (thus the 'H'). To get the font to look staggered, as at left, you alternate uppercase and lowercase: AnTeLoPe H. You can also use straight caps or lowercase to get a more even look. I may eventually do a lowercase set and make a regular 'Antelope'. Hand hinted! (8 June 1997)
Wolves, LowerWolves, Lower (Caps, Lower, Numbers, Most Punctuation, Some Special) is a more rapid version of my handwriting using a quill pen. Works for headlines or text, though it is messy! (6 June 1997) [demo]
TuesdayTuesday (Lower/Caps [same], Numbers, some Punctuation/Special) is another handwriting-like font with a low midline and where nothing drops below the baseline. It is all lowercase characters (the uppercase characters appear lowercase, but are present). Works for text as well as headlines, though for some of the less common punctuation you may need to substitute fonts. (3 June 1997)
Tombats OneTombats One (Caps/Lower - 52 total glyphs) is my first dingbats collection, aptly entitled 'Tombats'. There is no specific theme, except that almost all of the glyphs have a cartoony feel to them. Expect more in the Tombats series soon! (27 May 1997)
FresnelFresnel (Caps/Lower [same], Numbers, some Punctuation) looks sort-of like letters through a bad Fresnel lens. Looks best at large sizes! (In fact, since it is difficult to see the effect at all at small sizes on the computer screen, there's the top of a large F in grey at left as well.)(25 May 1997)
SubmergedSubmerged (Caps only) has large bold capitals submerged in sort of a blobby thing. Intended for headlines only.
ProteronProteron (Caps/Lower [same], Numbers, some Punctuation, some special) is a vaguely quill-like font, with exaggerated strokes and the oft dropped line. An interesting font, albeit difficult to read at smaller sizes. Definitely not recommended for body text.
FaradayFaraday (Caps only) is a caps-only font for headlines. The letters are light and internally jagged. This is my first font with my brand new Wacom ArtZII drawing tablet. Expect more soon!
Two Turtle DovesTwo Turtle Doves (Caps, Lower, Numbers, Punctuation, some special) would be a good font to do a really important Term Paper in. The letters have different sizes and basepoints, giving a very child's-handwriting look. Readable at small and large sizes. At large sizes the lines have genuine width and shape (the line width varies) which is not as visible here. [demo]
PrefixPrefix (Caps, lowercase, numbers, some punctuation, some special) is a kind of futuristic-sci-fi-movie-type font. The font works well for headlines (especially in all caps), though lowercase characters and most punctuation is included, and the font is mostly readable at smaller sizes.
Tom's New RomanTom's New Roman (All characters) is my replacement for the dreaded Times New Roman. The letters have slightly varying sizes and carry a hand-drawn look (because in fact they were). They also look much better than Times Roman when at large sizes. The text is readable at small point sizes, and all characters are included for complete compatibility. Also, this is more than a simple effect applied to the Times Roman font -- each character was drawn from scratch.
Pinball DataPinball Data (Caps, numbers, punctuation, some special) is a typeface which mimics a pinball-type dot matrix display with slightly uneven dots. The font is excellent for headlines (caps only), and is best in large sizes. Includes all common punctuation and some special characters. Monospaced. [demo]
EpilogEpilog (Caps, lower, numbers, punctuation, some special) is a pleasant and roundish font. The letters are smooth and heavy. Epilog includes all common-use characters, and is readable at small sizes, so is excellent for both text and headlines.
GermsGerms (Caps, most punctuation) is a typeface I used to draw all the time when I was a kid -- each of the letters is made into a monster with sharp ravenous teeth and a glaring eye (sort of). Only really suitable for headlines; it is caps only and the font is difficult to read when small.
RansomRansom (Caps, lower, numbers, some punctuation) is a ransom-note type font, made up of at least 20 type faces in both regular and inverse. Excellent for headlines and for actual ransom notes, but really shouldn't be used for text.
DissonantDissonant Fractured (Caps, lower, numbers, some punctuation) is a scary gothic-looking font. It is best suited for headlines and decorative purposes, but is readable as small as 10 point.
Tom's HandwritingTom's Handwriting (Caps, lower, numbers, punctuation, some special) is a scanned and autotraced font of my handwriting. It can be used for text as well as headlines. Quite cute, I think. =)
LevityLevity (Caps, lower, numbers, punctuation) is a happy-looking font, also designed for headlines (but will work perfectly well for text as well). Heavy, rounded characters.
ToastToast (Caps only) is designed for headlines only. An elegant (ha!) outline font with that hand-drawn look.
Secret LabsSecret Labs (Caps only) is the hallmark font of Secret Labs, Inc., which nobody has ever heard of (because it's a secret!). A very messy but interesting font, suitable for headlines only.
