INFORMATION WANTED ON A FRIENDSHIP SLOOP NAMED 'DEPRESSION': I own a Friendship Sloop built in 1899. Her name is Depression and has held that name since at least1935.I am trying to find some history on the boat . All I have is a picture taken in or around 1960 that says "Depression ,built by Wilbur Morse at Matinicus Island 1899 " It sounds to be like a contradiction , but I can't be sure because I have nothing else to go on.
I am a member of the Friendship Sloop Society and they don't seem to know much more than me. Can anyone help me ? I am scheduled to bring her to an antique boat show in Salem MA this summer and I'd like to have some info to tell the onlookers. Keith Roberts Keith@fjrobertsfloors.com April 2002
It would stand to reason that there are many of these in the area, and others may have information about them or may be wondering about them as well. I was told by a family elder that there was once an article in Downeast Magazine about such small forts. My family has spent summers in Friendship for nearly a century, and this fort has always been there. My family refers to it as the "Indian Rock," suggesting that we'd considered it ancient from the first time any of us saw it.
This isn't a geneology question, but it might be of interest to others researching local history.
