Monkton, a little History . . .

The Monkton Volunteer Fire Department was formed in February 1971. Harlold Danyow was elected Chief. Other officers were: 1st Asst. Chief David Thomas; 2nd Asst. Chief Ronald Sperry; 1st Engineer Clayton Warner; 2nd Engineer Greg Cota; Treasurer Charlie Huizenga; Clerk Bill Deal; Water Supply Bruce Nye and Steward Ken LaFountain.

Monkton's first truck was a 1939 American LaFrance with a 500 GPM pump and 500 gallon water tank purchased from Jamaica, Vermont. A 1952 Brockway with a 2200 gallon water tanker was purchased from the South Burlington Fire Dept.

The Fire Department Auxiliary was formed in 1973. The Auxiliary's dances, dinners, bake sales, and the like, raised money to outfit the department with necessary equipment. Monkton still serves the 'best pancake breakfast' in the county! (Don't miss the next one.)

Clark and Jessie Thomas donated land for a new station. With Miles Cota as building supervisor, and all the volunteer firemen pitching in, the present fire station was built in 1972-73. Clark Thomas donated labor for wiring the building.

Monkton First Response was formed in 1976 to provide assistance with medical related emergencies.

Monkton Volunteer Fire Department became a member of the ACFA in 1973. see ref (1)

Montkon, 1997 . . .

Monkton is an all volunteer department averaging about 20 calls a year, a good portion of those being EMS first responce. That may not seem like a lot, but remember Monkton only has about 400 homes and 2,000 residents.

Like most volunteer departments in small communities, Monkton struggles to keep it's membership roster full. Fortunately the department has a core group of very dedicated volunteers. Some of those most active are charter members with more than 25 years of service.

Rick Norris is the current volunteer Fire Chief. Known for his gormet desserts, Rick originally a produced 'cream' on his dairy farm, then sold his cows, and presently raises the sweetest 'berries' in the county. Rick's brother Vern served as past Chief.

The LaFrance and Brockway are gone, replaced by:

1972 John Bean 1250 gpm Pumper, 1000 gallon water tank
1971 International 2000 gallon tanker
1982 International 2000 gallon tanker
1968 GMC 1000 gpm Mini-pumper with 500 gallon tank and 1000' of 4" hose on a reel
1950 Dodge 4x4 Brush Truck
1982 Chevy First Response/Equipment Van

The department is seeking to purchase a truck to replace it's 1972 John Bean -- which is it's Main Truck (see related article.) The rig is now 25 years old and it's manufacture has gone out of business, making repair parts harder to find.

The department would prefer to find a replacement now, before maintenance and repair costs outweigh it's value -- a breakdown of this truck would leave the community relying on help from neighboring communities, 20 to 30 minutes away.
